Far Cry 4 Could Get Its Own Blood Dragon-Style Spinoff

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon turned out to be a delightful surprise last year, using the core of the very solid Far Cry 3 as the basis for a standalone spinoff game that was free to do something very different--satirize '80s action movies. Something similar could happen with Far Cry 4, but if it does, Ubisoft would like for it "to be surprising."

Asked about the possibility of creating another Blood Dragon-style spinoff, Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson had an encouraging answer for Red Bull: "We're talking about it… you never know."

Blood Dragon, a $15 download-only game released five months after Far Cry 3, sold quite well--within two months it had reached 500,000 sales. (A physical version was later released.) Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said at the time Blood Dragon had also spurred on sales of Far Cry 3 proper, and considering sales of most games taper off not along after launch, that no doubt made the publisher very happy.

If Ubisoft decides it does want to offer a standalone spinoff again, it might not offer precisely the same kind of over-the-top, neon-infused style as Blood Dragon. "The goal would be to be surprising, so it wouldn't be another Blood Dragon," Hutchinson said, "but hopefully something equally as odd and left field.”

Far Cry 4 launches next month, on November 18, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire Remake Demo Coming Next Week

A month before they go on sale, the remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire will be getting a demo, Nintendo announced today along with details on some of the special Pokemon you'll encounter in the full games.

We'd previously heard that a demo was coming which would allow you to transfer certain progress to Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby. Now we know it's coming next Tuesday, October 21, with the absurdly long title of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Special Demo Version. Nintendo still isn't saying exactly what the demo will entail, only that it offers "a glimpse of the adventure coming on November 21."

This demo won't be freely available on the eShop, as most demos are; instead, you'll need a special code. One way to guarantee yourself a code is to have a free Pokemon Trainer Club account and opt to be on the mailing list for the Pokemon Trainer Club Newsletter. You can sign up for that at Pokemon.com, though Nintendo says there will be others ways of receiving a code, too, should you not want to fill your inbox with Pokemon emails.

Aside from the demo talk, Nintendo also today offered some information on the specific Pokemon you'll be catching in next month's remakes. This includes the availability of two new Mega-evolved Pokemon, Mega Pidgeot and Mega Beedrill, as well as Mega Latios and Mega Latias.

The latter two are each exclusive to one of the remakes: You'll need a copy of Omega Ruby to catch Latias, or Alpha Sapphire for Latios. In both cases, you'll have to obtain what's called an Eon Ticket. Details on doing so haven't been shared, but having one will allow you to visit a certain region in the game that offers your only chance of catching either Pokemon.

Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby will be released for 3DS on November 21 in North America and November 28 in Europe. Neither game supports Nintendo's new Amiibo figures, though producer Junichi Masuda is interested in them. Masuda also recently explained to us why the series has become easier over time.

For more on the remakes, check out our full rundown on exactly what's new in them.
