The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl vs. Dinosaur Ultron

When her vacation to the Savage Land with Nancy and Tippy Toe goes awry (also Kraven the Hunter is there — hi, Kraven), Doreen Green somehow finds herself facing down Ultron himself. Oh, and did we mention how HE’S A GIANT ROBO-DINOSAUR NOW? Presenting, THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #25 by Ryan North with art by Erica Henderson! Featuring dinosaurs, dinosaurs, a robot dinosaur, Antonio the Doombot, and the rest!

But will her “unbeatable” reputation remain intact? Will Kraven turn Tippy into a fez? AND WHAT OF ANTONIO THE DOOMBOT?! Writer Ryan North answers all this and more…

Marvel.com: How has everyone — Tippy Toe, Doreen, Nancy, Kraven — been feeling about the Savage Land?

Ryan North: Nancy went into this excited to see some dinosaurs, and she saw some right off the bat, so she’s satisfied. No matter what else goes wrong, Nancy Whitehead saw her some gosh-darned dinosaurs. That said, everything else has gone wrong: the alien machinery keeping the Savage Land alive is failing, the dinosaurs are at risk, and to make matters worse? A piece of Ultron landed here, rebuilt itself as a Tyrannosaurus rex, and is now intent on killing everyone. So it’s been a trip.

Marvel.com: How are the group dynamics between this motley crew? (Like, as in, NO KRAVEN, DON’T TURN TIPPY INTO A FEZ.)

Ryan North: Kraven and Squirrel Girl have a long history now! He appeared in our (first) #1, and he’s been back since then. I think they’ve really grown to like each other. Like, they’re different people, but every time they hang out Kraven comes out of it a better person, and Squirrel Girl really respects him. They’re a pretty unlikely friendship, and I think that’s what they like most about each other.

So Kraven wouldn’t turn Tippy into a fez, out of respect for Squirrel Girl. But, other than that, it IS a risk: this is a man who turned a lion’s hide into his vest. And it’s not just, like, the back of a lion.  He wears the lion’s FACE. Kraven don’t play.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #25

Marvel.com: I guess a giant robot dinosaur trying to destroy her has put a little damper on things… but can the vacation to the Savage Land be salvaged?

Ryan North: I feel like a universal truth is this: whenever anyone visits a dinosaur theme park/ dinosaur nature reserve/ dinosaur continent preserved by ancient aliens/ WHATEVER, there is a tiny part of them that thinks, with just a tinge of excitement, “oh man, there’s a chance the dinosaurs will escape and go crazy, I wonder what that’ll look like.”

Ultron has definitely been behind that, so while Doreen is a little bit disappointed her trip hasn’t been the vacation she thought it might be, there is a much larger part of her that is excited because SHE GETS TO FIGHT FRIGGIN’ DINOSAURS.

I think it’s another universal truth that we’d all like to maybe fight a dinosaur sometime. I dunno. Maybe it’s just me.

Marvel.com: How is dinosaur Ultron different from other iterations of him that we have seen so far? Being a t-rex must be somewhat of a rush…

Ryan North: I’d like to think this is Ultron in his purest form. He is a robot man that hates organic life but who always makes himself look like a human. And yes, CLEARLY there’s some issues there that he needs to work out, but I think once he’s tasted being a dinosaur — tasted being a literal TYRANT LIZARD KING — he might show up in this form more often.  He doesn’t blend in as well… but then again, did he ever really? And now he has a tail, awesome teeth, and, frankly, adorable little arms!

Personality-wise, of course, he’s the same homicidal Ultron he’s ever been — only now he’s got the dinosaur body to back it up.

Marvel.com: What kind of dinosaur would you be, if you could robot yourself into one?

Ryan North: I’ve spent over 14 years writing Dinosaur Comics at qwantz.com, so my answer shouldn’t surprise anyone: yeah, I’d totally be a T-Rex, too. What’s not to like?  They’re awesome, they’re giant, they have teeth for days, and they look really good when viewed from the rear view mirror of a jeep. T-Rex all the way.

Failing that, Utahraptor or Dromiceiomimus are both excellent animals, too, and I’m not playing favorites.

Marvel.com: And please tell us that Antonio the Doombot is getting a spinoff… IF NOT, THEN AT LEAST TELL US MORE ABOUT HIM THE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW FUN FACTS ABOUT ANTONIO THE DOOMBOT, PLEASE.

Ryan North: Antonio the Doombot fun facts!  DID YOU KNOW: every Latverian must be able to build a Doombot from scratch in order to graduate high school? DID YOU ALSO KNOW: Antonio the Doombot is a Doombot built in the Savage Land whose sole purpose is to protect dinosaurs? He has all the will and desire of Doom, but bent solely towards protecting dinosaurs and their environment. Not gonna lie: he’s pretty great.

I can’t say if there will be a spinoff or not, but I know this: he will always live on in our memories.

Psych Ward: The Wizard

This file is nearing its digitize and destruction date as we have had it in storage for the required length of time. Just sending it on to you to make sure there are no existing legal concerns or outstanding issues with the client that would necessitate us not to moving forward. Please review and get back to me immediately.

Bentley Wittman is an adult male who appears to be in average physical health. He admits to being a career super criminal who goes by the alias of The Wizard. He recently became known as the leader of the Frightful Four, a villainous team that includes Medusa, one of the so-called “Inhumans” who news reports indicate have arrived in New York City and begun to sow chaos. While the Wizard refused to indicate his involvement or lack thereof in their presence, his presentation bordered on prideful delight.

The client has been required to attend sessions as part of a super villain deferment program the current administration is pilot testing. He arrives on time and is well dressed for each appointment and indicates his displeasure if previous clients run long or anything occurs that pulls focus from him during the course of session. He clearly enjoys talking about himself to this therapist although he rarely says anything of substance unless it is to set up a story about he triumphed over adversity.

Between the requirement he attend therapy and his own barely hidden contempt for anyone and everyone around him, it is hard to see helpful results coming from these sessions. He believes all are inferior to him, therefore almost no insight or observation is taken in or pondered. On the rare occasion something does manage to pierce his inflated sense of self, he often reintroduces it moments later as though he had thought of it, without any stated recognition of where the idea had come from.

Inhumans: Once and Future Kings #3

His diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder seems without question. He does possesses qualities associated with Antisocial Personality Disorder but most of his criminal activities seem to extend from a sense of superiority, not a lack of morality. However, given the scope of the incidents he has been involved in, it does feel important to continue to monitor for the possibility of anti-sociability.

In accordance with the court and government’s request this writer will continue to work with this client, but does urge his placement is reconsidered. The program itself may still well prove useful but it is my assertion that Bentley is a uniquely bad choice for it.

In deciding whether or not to move forward with the process of digitizing and destruction of this record, please refer also to Doctors Christopher Priest and Phil Noto’s work with him. Those records are available in the file INHUMANS: ONCE FUTURE KINGS #3 which will also be up for similar review on October 11.

Psy D. Candidate Tim Stevens is a Staff Therapist and likes flashing back to earlier days because oh how pretty he used to be.

Monkey selfie case: British photographer settles with animal charity over royalties dispute

Monkey selfie case: British photographer settles with animal charity over royalties disputeThe long-running legal battle over who owns the royalties to the famous "monkey selfie" has been settled. David Slater, the photographer whose camera was commandeered by a crested black macaque, has agreed to donate 25 per cent of the royalties generated by the photos with animal charities dedicated to protecting the monkeys' natural habitat. The agreement brings to an end to a dispute which originated in 2011 when Mr Slater travelled to  Sulawesi, Indonesia, and spent a week taking pictures of macaques. At one point he mounted the camera on a tripod and one of the monkeys started pressing the shutter button. Monkey selfies The popularity of the pictures triggered legal action after Mr Slater asked Wikipedia to take down one of the pictures which it had published without his permission. Wikipedia refused, claiming the copyright belonged to the monkey. Then despite the US Copyright Office ruling that animals could not own copyright,  an American charity, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), entered the fray. It sued  Mr Slater in 2015, arguing that the copyright belonged to one of the macaques, Naruto.  In a bizarre hearing in San  Francisco, lawyers argued not only whether a monkey could claim copyright but whether Naruto was even the correct monkey. Mr Slater, who said he made around £100 every few months from image sales of the grinning monkey, was confronted with legal bills running into thousands of pounds. David Slater, the photographer behind the monkey selfie pictures Credit: Thomas Gaffney/Caters News Agency Facing financial ruin he even considered giving up wildlife photography and becoming a tennis coach or dog walker instead. Finally, agreement has been reached. In a joint statement, Peta and Mr Slater said that the case raised "cutting edge issues" about the legal rights of non-human animals. "We must recognise appropriate fundamental legal rights for them as our fellow global occupants and members of their own nations who want only to live their lives and be with their families." Lawyers for the group and Mr Slater asked the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals to dismiss the case and throw out a lower court decision that said animals cannot own copyrights. Monkey selfie photographer enters legal battle with PETA 01:17 Mr Slater had argued that his company, Wildlife Personalities Ltd., owns worldwide commercial rights to the photos, including the now-famous selfie of the monkey's toothy grin. US District Judge William Orrick said in a ruling in favour of Mr Slater last year that "while Congress and the president can extend the protection of law to animals as well as humans, there is no indication that they did so in the Copyright Act." The 9th Circuit was considering PETA's appeal. The lawyers notified the appeals court on August 4 that they were nearing a settlement and asked the judges not to rule. A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit heard oral arguments in the case in July.
