California officers accused of 'sadistic and terrorizing acts' against prisoners

California officers accused of 'sadistic and terrorizing acts' against prisonersFour sheriff’s deputies have been arrested amid allegations they committed ‘terrorizing’ acts against prisoners. Four California sheriff’s deputies have been accused of “sadistic and terrorizing acts” against inmates, including encouraging prisoners to throw urine and feces at each other, laughing at an assault victim seeking help, strangling an inmate into unconsciousness and intimidating witnesses. The felony assault charges against four Alameda County deputies, accused of victimizing eight prisoners, have provided a window into the violent abuse and misconduct that prisoners’ rights activists say is still commonplace in some jails across the country, including in progressive regions that have pledged reforms.

Hawkeye: Unmasqued

Things have gotten pretty complicated in Kate Bishop’s life, to say the least. With her personal and professional lives  colliding, she’s been forced to face some challenges from her past. And, as it turns out, Kate’s old foe Madame Masque orchestrated the drama.

On October 4, writer Kelly Thompson and artist Leonardo Romero bring Kate and Madame Masque together for a showdown in HAWKEYE #11!

So what makes Masque such an excellent nemesis? We asked Kelly Thompson for her view on the classic villain.

Marvel.com: Kate has a long history with Madame Masquegoing back to writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja’s run. We’ve seen the tension building between these two characters for a while.

Kelly Thompson: Yes, Fraction wrote such a fantastic intro for those two characters—with Kate sort of cavalierly embarrassing Madame Masque by taking her place. I think that intro is exactly the kind that makes for arch-nemeses. Madame Masque has been fixating on Kate ever since. And it’s not an accident that their story plays out this way.

Marvel.com: Masque has worked with (and manipulated) Kate’s dadand we’ve seen Kate trying to sort things out with him recently. What are these events going to do to their relationship?

Kelly Thompson: Masque has definitely been playing the long game in her approach to Kate. Laying some groundwork that’s really emotionally devastating to Kate by encouraging and assisting Derek Bishop in sort of leveling up in his villainy, if you will. But Masque also has her own desires—namely power and powers—and that’s syncing up nicely now with her desire for pure revenge. So she’s moving into a less subtle, more openly destructive phase of her plans against Kate.

Marvel.com: It seems like Masque wants to clone Kate…and Kate’s definitely not down with that!

Kelly Thompson: Yeah, Masque’s desire to clone Kate—a literal reversal of what Kate did to her when they first met (though without the clones)—isn’t an accident. And Masque will not be the only one with revenge on the brain when this ends.

Marvel.com: In some ways, it seems like Kate’s dad could be her arch-nemesis as well. While she can’t just write her dad off, maybe Madame Masque will take his place?

Kelly Thompson: Yes, I think that’s definitely a slow boil story building in the direction of Bishop vs. Bishop. And Kate would much rather have Madame Masque to fight, as that’s far less complicated overall. She has a greater internal struggle with her father—knowing that there are good things about him, things that she wants to save. But she also feels the need to do what’s right and shut him down. She doesn’t really know what that should look like…does she arrest him? Does she fight him? What’s the move? It’s not an easy question for her to answer. It’s a little more complicated than your traditional “save the day” super hero story.

Marvel.com: What else can you tease about the upcoming issues?

Kelly Thompson: This arc comes to a close with issue #11—and Leonardo Romero and [colorist] Jordie Bellaire are doing truly tremendous work. I think people are going to really love it.

HAWKEYE# 12 exists as a standalone story—a team-up with Wolverine (and Gabby—and yes, Jonathan the Wolverine and Lucky will meet) and we’ve got the fantastic artist Michael Walsh coming back for that story.

Then in December with HAWKEYE #13, we kick off an all-new arc guest starring Hawkeye original flavor…Clint Barton!

Check out Kelly Thompson and artist Leonardo Romero’s HAWKEYE #11 on October 4!

Get Ready to Run: Dead Means Dead

Before Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka’s RUNAWAYS launches in September, take a look at all of their major adventures as seen on Marvel Unlimited!

Betrayal and death seem to have followed the RUNAWAYS stars since their inception. First their parents turned out to be wannabe world-conquerers, then their best friend and leader sided with them and, in the last arc, they lost their heart and soul, Gert, to a battle with a time-displaced Geoffrey Wilder.

In RUNAWAYS #19-24, Brian K. Vaughan, Adrian Alphona and Mike Norton showed how the kids all dealt with this ranging from Nico and Victor starting some kind of relationship to Chase angrily trying to find a way to bring her back. As if all that didn’t offer enough of a challenge, they also found themselves dealing with a giant monster crashing its way through downtown L.A.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

As his teammates fought the big red beast, Chase tracked down New Pride member Lotus and demanded she tell him how Wilder gained access to the Gibborim. The young man soon found himself standing before the six-toed behemoths and struck a deal. If he brought them an innocent soul, they’d bring Gert back. However, he only had a short amount of time to do so before the Gibborim retreated to another dimension.

Convinced that he could offer himself as an innocent sacrifice, Chase returned to the Hostel to clear a few things up. First he talked with Nico – after tying her up and taking her magic staff – then he gave her ways of taking out Victor if he turned evil.

With that he left to make his sacrifice, but his friends weren’t far behind. Ultimately, their efforts to back their friend proved less effective than Chase’s plan and the Gibborim’s ticking clock. See, upon offering himself as the innocent soul to be devoured by the big baddies, he would immediately stop being innocent.

Of course, that didn’t sit well with Chase, but he also wouldn’t stand for the Gibborim taking Nico as their sacrifice. Ultimately the young friends proved strong enough to not only save their leader, but also spend enough time doing so, so that the monsters had no choice but to return to their own dimension.

Vaughan and Alphona bid readers a fond adieu with a pair of surprise endings. First, Alex Wilder floated in a white space where the Gibborim wound up. He had communicated with Molly throughout the story, but that wasn’t enough to get him out of that particular version of Hell. Meanwhile, back in reality, the remaining Runaways returned to the Hostel where they found a surprise: Iron Man waiting to register them!

What is Marvel Unlimited?

LOST & FOUND

Very little is known about the Gibborim and even less can be confirmed. When the original Pride came together, the mystical giants offered them paradise in exchange for a pure human soul to feed on every year. Once the Pride’s children interfered with the rite, things started going downhill, leading to the Gibborim blowing up in their underwater stronghold. As we now know, though, they shifted into another dimension, where Geoffrey Wilder and later Chase met with them. Having run out of time at the end of this arc, they disappeared, winding up in the same white dimension as Alex Wilder.

While this isn’t confirmed, it’s possible to look at the Gibborim as the Runaways’ opposites. They reference a father figure a few times, which might mean that, unlike our title heroes, they decided to stick with the family business and look where it got them. With Alex’s last line of “Hell is for children” it could also be theorized that the Gibborim were children themselves, relatively speaking, which means they may have had more in common with the Runaways than anyone expected.
