DICE: Mobile presents opportunity, not threat–Report

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson says that there will always be a demand for console and PC games that deliver a "hi-def experience".

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson has refuted claims that a booming mobile gaming space will negatively impact traditional console and PC development.

Speaking to Edge, Troedsson said that he believed the mobile space is actually creating more opportunities for traditional gaming, because more people are playing games.

"People are playing more on their mobile devices, but I don't see people playing on other SKUs as a problem for triple-A developers. It's actually the contrary," Troedsson told the publication. "I think people engaging in any kind of gaming is good for all games, because it means that people will play more."

"I consider myself to be a hardcore, triple-A kind of player, and I definitely play more on my mobile devices now, but I don't play less on my other devices as a result. … There will always be a demand for games that require a lot of hardware, to deliver a really hi-def experience. … One thing is for sure, people will continue to want to play the best-looking games out there."

Last week, Epic Games revealed that the iPhone and iPad title Infinity Blade had been more profitable for the studio than its Gears of War franchise. At the time, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said he was surprised at how fast smartphone and tablet devices are improving.

Some reports suggest that the mobile gaming market will grow to $10 billion by the year 2014.
