New Song: Frank Ocean, ‘Whip Appeal’

Can Frank Ocean do no wrong? Pretty much. The rising R&B star, who's been tapped by everyone from Beyoncé to Kanye for his silky smooth pipes and game-changing songwriting skills, just dropped another jam: "Whip Appeal," a song about letting his lady take the wheel.

"Pretty girl driving my sports car/ 'Cause my license been suspended," is his excuse, but then Ocean gets generous: "I let you drive my Benz/ Flossing all your friends 'round town." Dude knows how to treat 'em. Looks like times have changed since Gang Starr's Guru rapped "Wherever my Beamer goes/ You know that I'm driving" back in the day. Ocean's melodies float over pulsing synthesizers and the bounce of busy drumming, with his falsetto making high-flying appearance in a chorus that challenges Usher's "Climax" for hook of the year. Goes without saying, but this is going to sound so dope in the car. Or take it to the gym: "Something to drive, or jog to," Ocean wrote on his Tumblr after posting the song.

"Whip Appeal" is apparently an outtake from Ocean's "Nostalgia, Ultra" mixtape, with new track "White," his soulful contribution to Odd Future's OF Tape Vol. 2, due out on Tuesday. And the singer's going to keep on cruising: He says his next project is coming "soon as f***."
