Killzone: Shadow Fall file size is 50GB

Sony says upcoming PS4-exclusive FPS is an "uber file" and "it looks it, too"; game's multiplayer mode runs at 60fps "a lot of the time," but not always.

Upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive first-person shooter Killzone: Shadow Fall's file size is around 50GB, Sony has revealed to Eurogamer in a new interview. The PS4 features a 500GB hard drive, though it is upgradeable.

The news came from United Kingdom managing director Fergal Gara as part of a discussion regarding the rise in popularity of downloads over physical media.

"First of all, [digital] is definitely going to grow as a means of consumption. And there are big innovations in the PS4 to make it more attractive and more easy gamer wise to want to download," Gara said. "The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don't need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file--I think it's cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it."

Overall, the download process on PS4 remains a "relatively tedious" endeavor, Gara said.

"It's not perfect. It's not seamless," he said. "The file version of the game versus the disc version of the game maybe needs to go through additional QA and additional testing. Some of the problems that have occurred have occurred on older machines, which of course when you go into the next-generation you at least get to reset and start again and everything's the same age and new. That helps."

Improving the download process on PS4 has been a "major area of focus" and investment, Gara said. While numerous users have reported poor download speeds for the PlayStation 3, Sony is confident it will put a better foot forward this time around, Gara said.

"The network will perform better on multiple levels, because it becomes not just a sales or gaming delivery but increasingly it becomes a social network. So it's got to be a compelling experience on multiple levels," Gara said. "It's going to be for no lack of investment, for no lack of effort and no lack of intention that things might fall a bit short. But we're definitely moving in the right direction, and I'm confident when step on and understand its importance."

Killzone: Shadow Fall developer Guerrilla Games told Eurogamer in a separate interview that the game's single-player campaign will run at 30 frames-per-second and outputs at 1080p, while multiplayer will be different. This mode will also output at 1080p, but will run at 60 frames-per-second "a lot of the time," but not always.

"The reason for that is tricky," lead designer Eric Boltjes said. "Running 60 has become this Holy Grail. Suddenly people think if you run 60 your game is better. Technically, that's not really true. But what it does do is it makes decisions go from input to on-screen a lot easier."

"So, having a constant 60 is not actually better than having a 'lot of the time' 60. It sounds weird, but it's actually true," he added. "Because usually in the moments where we're going to drop framerate, either you're already dead or it's too late anyway."

Killzone: Shadow Fall is a launch title for PS4, arriving on November 15 in North America.
