Nintendo will stop manufacturing aging console in island nation soon; no word on other territories.
Nintendo will cease production of the industry-shaking Wii console in Japan in the near future, the company said today in an update on its website.
A Nintendo of Europe representative told Eurogamer that the production halt only relates to Japan, at least for now. Details about production schedules for Europe and North America have not been disclosed.
A Nintendo of America representative was not immediately available to comment.
The Wii was released in 2006 and has sold over 100 million units worldwide to date, millions more than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The system introduced motion-controls as a primary means of play, something competitors Sony and Microsoft would adopt later on.
