Move Your PC Copy of Dark Souls to Steam for Free Starting in November

You'll be able to move your PC copy of Dark Souls--along with your progress and achievements--from Games for Windows Live to Steam beginning in November, although you'll have a limited time to transfer certain things.

Many PC gamers were upset when Bandai Namco first elected to use Games for Windows Live in the PC version of Dark Souls back in 2012. That sentiment only increased when it looked like Microsoft was shutting down the service. Although that's not the case, a number of companies have been moving their games off of Live (often to Steam), which is precisely what's now happening with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

Once Bandai Namco enables migration, the process for claiming your free Steam copy will be fairly simple: All you'll need to do is redeem your Games for Windows Live token on Steam. To find your token, just run through this process.

During a period in November, you'll also be able to transfer your character and any achievements you've unlocked to Steam. (Leaderboard rankings will not transfer.) This process will need to be done during this specific period, unlike moving your copy of the game, which can be done anytime once support for doing so is enabled.

Specific dates for when migration begins (and ends, in the case of saves/achievements) will be announced sometime soon. Right now, Bandai Namco is only saying it will begin sometime in November.
