Legendary LEGO® artist Nathan Sawaya joins forces with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to create the world’s largest collection of DC Comics-inspired LEGO artwork, all created from millions of bricks
Details of the never-before-seen international touring exhibition were shared during an interactive SDCC panel which included the design of an all new Batmobile to be included in the exhibition
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)–Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), on behalf of DC Entertainment, announced today that the first venue to host the worldwide tour of the new The Art of the Brick: DC Comics exhibition will be Sydney, Australia’s Powerhouse Museum, part of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS). Created by artist Nathan Sawaya, the contemporary art exhibition takes on the breadth and depth of the characters and stories from DC Comics’ 80-year history with large-scale sculptures of Super Heroes and Super-Villains made entirely out of millions of LEGO® bricks.
Fans at San Diego Comic-Con tonight were given a behind-the-scenes glimpse at several sculptures to be showcased at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, including interpretations of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman during the “DC Comics Meets LEGO Art” panel. Renowned comic book artist and Co-Publisher of DC Entertainment, Jim Lee, joined Sawaya to celebrate the convergence of the world’s greatest Super Heroes with one of the world’s most popular toys.
Sawaya and Lee, along with the help of the fans in the packed panel room, collaborated live on a brand new Batmobile design that Sawaya will now create out of LEGO bricks in his Los Angeles art studio. The LEGO Batmobile sculpture will debut along side more than 100 works of art in Sydney when the exhibition opens this November.
“We are thrilled to launch The Art of the Brick: DC Comics at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia, continuing our history of working with premier cultural institutions as part of our successful touring exhibition business,” said Brad Globe, President, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “We know fans in Australia and around the world will enjoy Nathan’s artistic interpretations of DC Comics’ famous Super Heroes, Super-Villains and more as they come to life through LEGO bricks.”
“The Art of the Brick: DC Comics will have a hugely receptive audience in Sydney, Australia’s cultural and artistic hub. The NSW Government is proud to partner in bringing Nathan Sawaya’s new exhibition to our Harbour City, and we look forward to welcoming the many visitors who will be drawn to its larger-than-life displays,” said New South Wales Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres.
“This new exhibition continues the Powerhouse Museum’s strong tradition of exploring contemporary culture through art and design and we are delighted to be the exclusive Australian venue on this tour,” said MAAS Director, Rose Hiscock. “We are thrilled to be the first to showcase Nathan’s new collection.”
“The Powerhouse Museum is a legendary venue and the ideal location to kick-off the global tour, said Sawaya, artist and founder of The Art of the Brick. “Fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with their favorite Super Heroes and Super-Villains in an immersive environment customized for the art.”
Throughout a series of galleries, The Art of the Brick: DC Comics will showcase Sawaya’s interpretations on characters, vehicles, environments and themes found throughout the DC Comics mythology including transformation and reinvention, strength and weakness, as well as good vs. evil.
The exhibition will stay true to the creative disciplines of Sawaya’s original touring exhibition, which encourage inspiration, education and participation
The international tour of The Art of the Brick: DC Comics will begin in November in Sydney, followed by venues in additional major cities around the globe. To register for ticket pre-sales at the Powerhouse Museum, visit: http://maas.museum.
