I saw this on Kickstarter today and thought it might be of interest to AFi readers:
The Outer Realm book will be the first Star Wars collectible book focusing entirely and in depth on the subject of vintage era unlicensed Star Wars toys from 1977 and on. With few notable exceptions we will not be going beyond 1995 when the POTF2 (modern era) Star Wars figures were introduced.
This book will be a for collectors by collectors project. While none of those involved endorse, support, or excuse those that produce bootleg items, we do acknowledge the history and collectability of bootleg Star Wars toys from the vintage era.
As for what we are showing; We will not only show as many known variants of each figure as possible, but we will do our best to show why these figures existed, beyond just the surface. Our great team of co-authors and contributors comprise some of the most prominent and knowledgeable Star Wars bootleg collectors in the hobby.
We will be showing the earliest US sold knock offs made by profiteers out to make a quick buck before Kenner toys hit the shelves, all the way out to items that HAD to exist in Soviet Bloc countries where licensed Star Wars items were illegal to import, and everything in between.
The projected size of the book will be apx. 200 pages. It may run over a few and may be a few shy, all depending on how everything fits together once edited.
