Launching tomorrow, October 13th on iOS and Android is the all new puzzle game, “My Little Pony: Puzzle Party”! Recently I had a chat with the game’s publisher Backflip Studio’s My Little Pony brand manager Orion Brown about the new game and was able to play an advanced version of it. According to Orion Puzzle Party is, “A really fun, fast paced, puzzle ‘match 3 game’. Very similar to some of the Candy Crushes of the world, Frozen Freefall, in gameplay but it really brings the authenticity of “Friendship Is Magic” into this gaming genre.”

By authenticity she means that all of the game’s assets are from the show and the developers worked directly with Hasbro  in order to bring fans a very authentic My  Little Pony experience. So much is the game tied to the “Friendship Is Magic” show that as you proceed through the first 150 levels of the game you’re delving into a story that covers season 1 of the tv show. With more updates to come in the year, the game is being  built to reflect the entire canon of the show, including the upcoming movie in the fall of next year.

I recently discovered the game “Frozen Freefall” on my XBOX, and while it is fun, it is also somewhat difficult. When I asked Orion what the difficulty level and age range was for “Puzzle Party”, she had a pretty interesting answer, “We’re really focusing on adult targets. When you look at the ‘match 3’ space it’s dominated by 18-36, with the median age being closer to 34. Older and older folks are playing, if you consider that old…So that’s the audience we’re really trying to play to.” This makes sense since “Friendship Is Magic” is known to be subversive and even helped usher in a new generation of older fans and the rise of the Brony.

The game is really fun and I have been playing it for a couple of days now. I find the puzzles and challenges to be fun and the difficulty level increases as you go. While I was never swept up in the “Friendship Is Magic” craze I do see its appeal and find the characters and designs quite cute and charming. If you’re a fan of ‘match 3’ or puzzle games this is definitely good way to pass the time. The games also includes contributions from the entire voice cast so if you’re a fan of the show then this game is perfect for you. The game launches tomorrow in the Google Play and iTunes App Store!
