What do you do when the one thing that gives your people great powers and individuality also kills another group? That’s the question that Charles Soule, Jeff Lemire, and Leinil Francis Yu plan on exploring in the pages of INHUMANS VS. X-MEN.
Launching with a #0 issue by Soule and Kenneth Rocafort on November 30, the series will delve into this very important conflict between two of the most powerful peoples in the Marvel Universe. We spoke with Yu about diving back into the event pool, working with the creative team and the challenges of drawing these kinds of epic stories.
Marvel.com: You’ve obviously had some experience with this whole event thing, but how does it feel to be handling a major Marvel Universe conflict like this?
Leinil Francis Yu: I feel right at home. Working on Secret Invasion, the Avengers [books] and the recent SECRET WARS: CIVIL WAR prepared me for this. It’s quite an undertaking, but I think I managed well.
Marvel.com: Given his history with the X-Men and his recent time spent with the Inhumans, how does Beast feel about this looming conflict and how does that come across on the page?
Leinil Francis Yu: He’s definitely torn between people he considers family. I don’t envy him. It was quite easy to convey his emotions as the writers did a great job on the script.
Marvel.com: From your perspective is there anything visual or physical that separates mutants from Inhumans?
Leinil Francis Yu: I think there is less deviation from the basic human template when it comes to the Inhumans. They can easily blend in with the rest of humanity. [Inhumans Vs. X-Men #1 preview by Leinil Francis Yu]
Marvel.com: It sounds like this book will feature a huge cast of characters. What kind of challenges does working with such a large group offer you as an artist?
Leinil Francis Yu: It’s really just learning to draw new costumes. Using reference and the nature of modern costume designs—[they’re] more intricate—slows down the process a bit. I find myself needing to spend a few pages to a whole issue before I get to the point where I feel I’m really happy with how I portray the characters.
Marvel.com: Were there any characters on either side of the war you were particularly excited to draw?
Leinil Francis Yu: Drawing the X-Men again is always exciting. As a 90’s Jim Lee/ Whilce Portacio fan, it’s my homage to them. Surprisingly, I also love drawing the Inhumans. I like Karnak the most.
Marvel.com: How was it working with Charles, Jeff, and the editorial staff to set up the rest of INHUMANS VS. X-MEN?
Leinil Francis Yu: Fantastic. Love those guys.
