One Direction and Justin Bieber's Grammy noms must've gotten lost in the mail.
The nominations for the 2013 Grammys were announced last night, and as usual there was plenty for obsessive music fans like us to cheer for and even more for us (also sometimes grumpy music fans) to tweet #smh about. Here are a few things that we learned after digesting the Grammy nominations overnight and refreshing the page a dozen times to make sure that they really forgot to nominate Psy for anything.
Read our 8 Grammy Nominee Lessons and Surprises after the jump!
1.) Nothing in life is fair, and everyone hates some of your favorites: One Direction, our favorite UK heartthrobs, aren't going this year to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony, because they were shut out of both the New Artist and Song of the Year categories. That's what makes them beautiful, though, right? They don't need awards. Oh, also a fella by the name of Justin Bieber didn't garner a single nomination either. Don't stress it too much, it's a good lesson to learn as a young music fan that everyone is stupid and has much worse taste than you.
2.) Rock and roll is back! While the 2012 Grammys seemed to be the coming-out party for electronic music, music with real guitars is very well represented, with Mumford & Sons and fun. grabbing six nominations each, and The Black Keys coming in close behind with five. Rock on, dudes.
3.) R&B isn't dead! Probably the biggest story of the year was the emergence of smooth, throwback R&B acts like Frank Ocean, who raked in six nods, including Album of the Year for his heartbreaking Channel Orange, Best New Artist, and Record of the Year for "Thinking Bout You." Fellow crooner Miguel turned up with five nominations, including Song of the Year for his pleading slow jam "Adorn." He's also mentioned in Best R&B Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Rap Song (for his collab with Wale on "Lotus Flower Bomb").
4.) Actually, folk rock is the new rock: The Lumineers, who charmed the pants off the world with their debut self-titled record and its gently-strummed "Ho Hey" show up for Best New Artist, and Best Americana Album, while musical godfathers Mumford & Sons grabbed Best Rock Song, Album of the Year, and Best Rock Performance, among others. Thinking about maybe trading the synthesizer we bought this year for a banjo.
5.) The only people making hard rock are 100 years old: Who put this best Hard Rock/Metal Performance together, your grandfather? That's supercool if he did, actually! Maybe you could slip him a few newer records this year beyond the old folks' home lineup here of Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Marilyn Manson.
6.) Taylor wuz robbed!!! In a year where it seemed like Taylor Swift was everywhere, she "only" received three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” (durr, of course!), Best Country Duo/Group Performance, and something called Best Song Written For Visual Media, which pretty much sounds like a made-up category to us. Why you gotta front, Grammys? TAYLOR SHOULD'VE BEEN ALL OVER YOU!
7.) Starships don't fly so high after all: Not for the Grammy voters anyway, who grounded Nicki Minaj's starship with a big fat goose egg. Maybe they were still reeling from her exorcism during last year's Grammy performance?
8.) Carly Rae Jepsen may officially become a legend: At least that seems like what the Grammys are trying to tell us here. We could've sworn she'd nab a Best New Artist nom, but Carly Rae Jepsen's place in pop history could be sealed with a Song of the Year and/or Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy for "Call Me Maybe." This is crazy.
