Capes, and cowls, and monsters, oh my!

The superhero bubble is showing absolutely no signs of popping in 2020, which is great news for fans of the DCEU and MCU. With Disney+'s slate of MCU TV shows, Phase 4, and DC's features like Wonder Woman 1984 all just around the corner, it's the perfect time to get a fresh start on some of the major comics from Marvel and DC slated to launch in the new year.

In 2019, Marvel revitalized their X-Men titles with House of X and Powers of X which paved the way for a brand new ongoing X-Men team book while DC tore through their Year Of The Villain crossover event. And both of the Big Two struck gold with character-limited series like Martian Manhunter and Spider-Man: Life Story. It's looking like 2020 will continue the trend of zooming in to the nitty-gritty with both A-list characters and hidden gems.

Strange Adventures

Tom King and Mitch Gerads, the team that brought us 2018's breakout Mister Miracle maxi-series that redefined one of Jack Kirby's classic New Gods, are reuniting to give Adam Strange a similar treatment alongside artist Doc Shanner. Called Strange Adventures, the 12-issue series will dig deep into the bizarre legacy of the planet-trotting pulp hero who is able to harness the power of "zeta beams" and transport himself from Earth to the alien planet Rann.

Spider-Woman

The entire Spider-Man family has been experiencing something of a renaissance for the last two years between the PS4 video game, the movie Into The Spider-Verse, and the MCU, so it goes to follow that their comic book counterparts are reaping the benefits. While Peter, Miles, and Gwen have all been riding the wave for a while, one of their lesser known cohorts, Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, is looking to get in on the action with a brand-new solo series by Karla Pacheo and Pere Perez. Starting in March of 2020, you can check this series you, if you're really looking to round out your Spider-knowledge.

Suicide Squad

2020 is going to be the year to get super into Suicide Squad in preparation for the upcoming James Gunn reboot--due out in the spring of 2021--and thankfully, DC is making life easy for any lapsed or prospective fans. There's a brand-new Suicide Squad series that kicks off this December by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. Now's your chance to be completely clued into one of DC's weirdest and most wonderful teams.

X-Men

This one technically isn't new for 2020--Marvel spent the bulk of this year completely overhauling their X-Men lines with two limited series, House of X and Powers of X, that dovetailed into a new X-Men ongoing series by Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Yu. With only four issues under its belt, 2020 is still an optimal time to jump into the new series and the perfect way to introduce yourself to some of the other X-titles Marvel has going on right now like Excalibur, X-Force, and New Mutants.

Batman Tales: Once Upon A Crime

Sometimes Batman needs to be cute instead of scary, and that's exactly what the team that brought us Lil' Gotham, by Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs, specialize in. This upcoming young adult graphic novel is returning to the super-stylized, super-adorable world of Lil' Gotham for even more fun for the whole family this February.

X-Men/Fantastic Four

If you're less interested in the X-Men themselves and more curious about how the massive changes made in HoX and PoX affected the larger Marvel universe, X-Men/Fantastic Four is probably going to be right up your alley. A mini-series written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Terry and Rachel Dodson, the book is going to focus on the Richards family and their precarious place with the new mutant status quo.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

In the less distant MCU future, we have the first Disney+ MCU TV show, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on the docket for Fall of 2020. Though it's not officially a tie-in to the show by any means, the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier five-issue mini-series by Derek Landy and Ferderico Vincenti hitting shelves in February of 2020 is sure to provide some clues for the tone and character dynamics we'll see in the show.

Plunge

DC's horror-centric, Joe Hill-curated imprint, Hill House Comics, is expanding in 2020 with Plunge by Hill and Stuart Immonen. The story of a marine biologist and a salvage team on an operation to recover the wreckage of a lost exploration vessel called the Derleth that mysteriously sent out a distress signal despite disappearing some 40 years ago.

Guardians of the Galaxy

We may know next to nothing about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 aside from the fact that James Gunn was re-hired to direct it, but given that it is definitely happening, keeping up with Guardians comics is definitely a good idea. There's an all-new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing series kicking off with Al Ewing and Juann Cabal hitting shelves in January 2020 with an expanded team line-up.

The Low, Low Woods

DC's Hill House Comics imprint is publishing its final title of 2019, The Low, Low Woods by Carmen Maria Machado and Dani, in December with issue #1. But we're still going to keep it on our radar for the new year because the series is continuing through 2020 for its five-issue run. The story of a mysterious town called Shudder-to-Think Pennsylvania plagued by humanoid animals, skinless men, and hungry witches. This is sure to be the perfect comic for fans of horror like Silent Hill and Castle Rock.
