New Torment RPG revealed

Isometric single-player role-playing game Tides of Numenera from inXile coming to PC and Mac; Kickstarter going live Wednesday.

inXile Entertainment today announced Torment: Tides of Numenera, a DRM-free single-player role-playing game for PC, Mac, and potentially other platforms. A Kickstarter campaign for the project will begin Wednesday, though the company did not divulge a funding target.

Torment: Tides of Numenera--due out December 2014--is set in Monte Cook's tabletop role-playing world of Numenera, which itself was successfully funded through Kickstarter. It will have an isometric perspective and runs on the Unity game engine.

inXile was clear that Tides of Numenera is not a sequel to Planescape: Torment, but rather a "completely new game" that has been designed to provide the same experience and feeling as the original. The game asks players: What does one life matter?

InXile says choices will matter in Torment: Tides of Numenera. "Torment is a game of complex and nuanced morality, deep and reactive choice and consequence, and immersion into a new and strange vision," the company said.

The development team behind Torment: Tides of Numenera is made up of veterans, including Brian Fargo (inXile founder), Kevin Saunders (Neverwinter Nights II: Mask of the Betrayer), and original Planescape: Torment developers Colin McComb and Adam Heine, as well as the aforesaid Monte Cook.

inXile is also working on Wasteland 2, which it successfully crowd-funded last year. That game is due out during October 2013.
