Godzilla vs. Kong is having a massive run at the box office, even despite the pandemic. The movie made $48.5 million in the US over its five-day opening weekend period and another $76.1 million from international markets in its second weekend. In total the monster mash-up movie has now reached about $285.4 million worldwide through Sunday. In only five days in the US, Godzilla vs. Kong has surpassed the total amount of money that Wonder Woman 1984 made during its run in the US, which isn't a perfect comparison given that Wonder Woman 1984 was released in December 2020. Back then, far fewer theaters in the US were open due to the pandemic; today, with millions of people in the US vaccinated, more than 94% of US cinemas are open. Perhaps a better comparison is to its predecessor, Godzilla King of the Monsters, which made $47.7 million over its first three days in a world where there was no pandemic.
