The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to soar at the box office, nearing $700 million already. But how far can it go? The Hollywood Reporter said the film should crack $1 billion before its run in theaters ends, and if it does, it will join a select few animated films at that level. Only 10 animated movies have ever made $1 billion or more, a list topped by 2019's The Lion King remake ($1.66 billion)--though not everyone agrees that it is an "animated" film considering its photo-realistic graphics. Not counting that movie, Disney's Frozen II tops the charts with $1.45 billion, followed by Frozen ($1.28 billion), Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion), and Minions ($1.16 billion). The Super Mario Bros. Movie will also become just the third movie--of any kind--during the pandemic era to pass $1 billion if it can climb that high.
