Buzzworthy Obsession: Smallpools

Smallpools are about to take over your summer.

Smallpools are ready to take over your summer.

If you haven't heard of Smallpools yet, it's probably because they didn't exist: The Los Angeles band was born just this year, when New Jersey boys Sean Scanlon and Mike Kamerman connected with Oregon expats Joe Intile and Beau Kuther. But it's been love at first sight ever since. The band's chemistry ignites on "Dreaming," which quickly cracked No. 1 on the Hype Machine -- not bad for their first single. It's easier to hear why: Smallpools play bouncy electro-pop hookier than a fishing trip with your dad.

The band has stepped out on its first-ever tour this month, with gigs at venues from New York's Bowery Ballroom to Los Angeles' Echoplex, where they'll finish the tour with a hometown show. With production group Captain Cuts behind the boards, they're also at work on their debut album, but they've got four new songs to tide us over. Their self-titled new EP includes "Dreaming" (check out the track's trippy, just-released music video) along with "Mason Jar," "Over & Over," and "No Story Time," a track that goes Totally '80s with handclaps and floating synthesizers under its sugar-high chorus. "Don't you leave me alone, don't you let go!" Scanlon yelps, and we're gonna hold on tight.

We recommend the band if you like Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit, or drinking too much Red Bull and tearing up your bedroom with dance moves. The band's Smallpools is out now on RCA.
