What if the machines rose against humanity and the world plunged into a technological blackout like it was theorized to when the clocks turned to midnight on January 1, 2000? Kyle Mooney's (Brigsby Bear, SNL) directorial debut wants to answer that in the teen horror comedy, aptly titled Y2K. The film stars Jaeden Martell (It), Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), The Kid Laroi, and Fred Durst--because what is the year 2000 without Fred Durst, backwards red baseball cap and all? You can check out the hilarious red band trailer below. The trailer has just enough pre-2000 references to set the vibe before it turns violent and funny (death by Tamagotchi might be a cinematic first). Y2K made its world premiere during South By Southwest earlier this year with it earning mixed and positive reviews. Not terrible especially with this being Mooney's first feature under his belt. In addition to his stint on SNL, Mooney also wrote 2017's Brigsby Bear--which he starred in--and created Netflix's Saturday Morning All Star Hits, an adult animated series in the style of '80s and '90s cartoon programming blocks, in 2021.
