The final quarter of the year is usually the busiest time on the gaming calendar, and 2022 isn't bucking that trend. Ahead of some massive releases in November and December, October is getting the party started with a collection of AAA heavyweights, quirky indie games, and some fascinating titles fighting for a spot this month. From the long-in-development Gotham Knights to the billion-dollar return of Call of Duty, there's no shortage of digital entertainment to look forward to in October. You can also bank on the early release of Overwatch 2 to generate some headlines; Bayonetta 3 looks ready to provide some devilish fun on Switch; and Persona 5 is making a royal appearance on new platforms. And that's without mentioning Uncharted making its leap to PC, Dragon Ball: The Breakers taking the franchise in a surprising new direction, and Scorn having some very suggestive imagery. Whatever your taste, there's a good chance you'll find something to dig into this month.
Overwatch 2 (October 4)
After years of development, Overwatch 2 finally arrives on PC and console in early access. This will consist solely of the game's PvP mode, while the much-hyped PvE mode is scheduled to launch in 2023. Like the original game, expect a roster of colorful heroes and villains, plenty of chances to refine your role on the battlefield, and a seasonal approach to content that will see new maps, heroes, game modes, and more added to Blizzard's team-based first-person shooter in the weeks and months to come.
Nier: Automata - The End of Yorha Edition (October 6)
Long considered to be one of the best titles that Platinum Games has ever developed, Nier: Automata is finally headed to the Nintendo Switch this month. Nier: Automata The End of Yorha Edition packages the original game with all of its previously released DLC and costumes, as well as a few Switch-exclusive outfits.
No Man's Sky (October 7)
Can an entire universe fit inside of the Nintendo Switch? If it's the cosmic sandbox of No Man's Sky, the answer is a very definite yes, as the Hello Games-developed title will be warping onto Nintendo's handheld system on October 7. While the game is coming to Switch years after it first arrived on other platforms, the good news is that you'll be able to play it at its very best thanks to a constant flow of updates, expansions, and tweaks that have all been freely added to No Man's Sky.
No More Heroes 3 (October 11)
On the other end of the console exclusivity spectrum, No More Heroes 3 is breaking out of the Switch slammer and is headed to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on October 11. If you missed it the first time around--or you don't have a Switch--No More Heroes 3 follows Travis Touchdown on a mission to reclaim his assassin glory by killing as many alien invaders as possible. For the most dedicated fans of the series, you can grab a physical Day 1 Edition that includes new box art illustrations, a 70-page art book, a CD soundtrack, and a Santa Destroy biker license plate.
Lego Bricktales (October 12)
Lego Bricktales looks like a soothing experience for consoles and PC. You'll use brick-by-brick building mechanics to solve puzzles while exploring stories in charming dioramas to experience a variety of adventures. In each diorama you're given a set of bricks and it's up to you to figure out how to use them to solve the various riddles, and once you're successful, you can revisit that environment and improve your build with a huge selection of additional bricks.
Scorn (October 14)
Inspired by the works of Swiss artist H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, Scorn is a fleshy and disturbing dive into biomechanical nightmares that lets its gross visuals do the talking for it. A combination of horror, puzzles, and first-person shooting, Scorn's visual style doesn't rely on jump scares to make your heart rate spike. Instead, you'll be subjected to an environment that will make you feel constantly uneasy and also slightly nauseous, based on the unsettling nature of the game's imagery.
NHL 23 (October 14)
EA's professional ice hockey simulation is hitting the ice once again this month, so get ready to lace up, skate into the rink, and get the puck out of here. Anaheim Ducks superstar Trevor Zegras is on the cover alongside Team Canada's Sarah Nurse this year, and you can expect smarter goalies, the return of X-factor abilities, and a new last-chance move that's bound to make each game an exciting showdown.
PGA Tour 2K23 (October 14)
The latest tour of the golf course is a prime example of more is better. More golf pros (they are playable this time), more licensed courses, more control options, and even more authenticity headline PGA Tour 2K23. Beyond the wealth of licensed courses and tournaments, you can use the in-depth course designer to create your own tracks, compete in online tournaments and join societies with your friends, make your way from fledgling pro to golfing legend in the career mode. PGA Tour 2K23 even has multiple casual game modes such as Topgolf. Golf enthusiasts won't want to miss this one.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers (October 14)
What happens when you combine Dead by Daylight with Dragon Ball Z? You get Dragon Ball: The Breakers, a game that flips the script on the usual high-power fisticuffs and instead casts you as a lowly mortal working to survive being annihilated by the likes of Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu. Alongside six other survivors caught up in an unexpected temporal phenomenon, you'll need to use your wits and skill to escape. Or you can play as one of Dragon Ball Z's big bads, and have a blast with your overwhelming power.
A Plague Tale: Requiem (October 18)
A Plague Tale: Innocence was a surprise hit when it first arrived, and a few years later, its first sequel is here to up the rat ante. Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo as they struggle to survive against an inquisition that is hunting them down, swarms of rodents, and a disease that is tearing medieval France apart.
Marvel Snap (October 18)
Up for a game of cards? Developed by Second Dinner--a studio formed by former Hearthstone developers--Marvel Snap is a card-battling game featuring heroes and villains from the house of ideas, but with an emphasis on quick matches. It also uses a unique bluffing mechanic--the titular "snap"--which allows you to challenge your opponent and raise the stakes.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection (October 19)
Sony's globetrotting Uncharted franchise is the latest PlayStation IP that's making a leap to PC, bundling up two archeological adventures together for a complete package of fun. Play as Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer in the Legacy of Thieves Collection and get ready to leave a mark on the world with blockbuster action and a cinematic story that takes full advantage of PC hardware to deliver a good-looking escape from reality.
Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef (October 20)
Warhammer 40K games are usually grimdark affairs, but Shootas, Blood & Teef is going all in on the brilliant stupidity of the Orcs that inhabit the deadly galaxy of that universe. From the developers of the Guns, Gore and Cannoli, this spin-off is a hand-drawn 2D action-adventure that's all about action, violence, and the fun side of WAAAGH.
New Tales from the Borderlands (October 21)
A clean break from the original game that followed a pair of Hyperion employees caught up in a plot that they were definitely unprepared for, New Tales from the Borderlands follows a new trio of characters as they work to find a Vault key that could lead them to untold riches. Once again, you'll be experiencing this story through dialogue choices and quicktime events, with each choice having ramifications that you'll have to deal with.
Gotham Knights (October 21)
A brand-new Gotham City sandbox, Gotham Knights gives you full control of Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing as they band together in the wake of Batman's death. Supervillains are on the rise, crime is out of control, and only a quartet of vigilantes armed with stylish gadgets and eye-catching costumes can save the city from the forces of evil. Just remember, it's all about Bat-family.
Persona 5 Royal (October 21)
Previously a PS4 exclusive, one of the best JRPGs of all time is finally headed to new platforms. Persona 5 Royal is headed to Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on October 21, with this version being the definitive edition of the smash-hit Atlus game. If you're up for a casual hundred hours of gameplay, a terrific cast, and plenty of handy quality-of-life updates, you'll want to join the Phantom Thieves for a terrific caper.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force (October 27)
Multiple playable characters, a sci-fi fantasy story, and a massive emphasis on exploration makes the latest chapter in the Star Ocean series an interesting departure from previous entries. A massive JRPG set at the edge of the universe, Star Ocean: The Divine Force also features a unique battle system that allows for action-packed fights while using an accessible control scheme.
Bayonetta 3 (October 28)
It has been an eternity--eight entire years!--since Nintendo's favorite witch was last seen in action, but the wait is almost over. Bayonetta 3 throws the hair-raising sorceress into a war against man-made bioweapons called Homunculi, but she'll be taking on those abominations with a few new tricks up her sleeve such as Demon Masquerade for some stylish combat. There'll also be a new character to play as in the form of Viola, a feisty witch-in-training who combines lethal sword techniques with her unstoppable demon cat companion Cheshire.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (October 28)
The holiday season wouldn't feel right without a new Call of Duty, and as usual, Activision's blockbuster franchise is back in action. Modern Warfare 2 (not to be confused with 2009's game of the same name) is being billed as a new era for the series, one in which all-new gun handling, an advanced AI system, and plenty of graphical innovations headline this year's entry. Beyond the hyperbole, expect a triple-threat of content, such as the cinematic single-player campaign, co-op Special Ops experience, and the multiplayer suite that keeps Call of Duty humming along until the next game in the series hits the scene.
Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and Switch cloud edition (October 28)
It turns out that you can run the graphically impressive Resident Evil Village on a Nintendo Switch, technically. Capcom's latest chapter in its bioweapon saga will be streaming its way onto the Nintendo handheld, and thanks to the magic of cloud gaming, you'll be able to get the full survival-horror effect if you have the bandwidth for it. If you're curious, you can grab a demo right now to see how Resident Evil Village holds up on your home internet. The Gold Edition hitting other platforms includes the main game, the new Winters' expansion, plus plenty of additional DLC to sink your teeth into.
