For anyone who grew up watching TV in the 1970s, 80s or 90s, the name Stephen J. Cannell is synonymous with exciting detective series and action shows replete with heavy doses of humor and intrigue and characterized by tight narratives with close-ended plots. He was a rare breed of creative entrepreneur, a prolific writer who leveraged his track record as a TV hitmaker into the foundation of a thriving independent studio in the 1980s and ’90s. Remarkably, during his 30 years in TV, Cannell created or co-created more than 40 series, penned more than 450 episodes and produced more 1,500 episodes of television. Cannell was feted in 2006 with the Paddy Chayefsky Award from the Writers Guild of America from whom he’d earned a lifetime achievement award in 2005, and the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award from NATPE in 2007.
“Stephen Cannell was both an entrepreneur and visionary who almost single-handedly created the modern television, writer-centric business model,” said Mark Kashden, SVP Acquisitions at Cinedigm. “We are honored to be entering a distribution deal with Stephen J. Cannell Productions, the latest example of Cinedigm’s aggressive acquisition strategy to bolster their already huge library of over 52,000 films and TV episodes”.
