Crytek, developer of Crysis, Warface, and Ryse: Son of Rome, has announced Robinsion: The Journey, a new virtual reality game.

Built on the CryEngine, Robinson: The Journey casts players as a young boy that has crash-landed on a mysterious plant and must explore the unknown.

"With freedom to explore their surroundings in 360 degrees of detail, players will become pioneers by interacting with the rich ecosystem around them and unearthing incredible secrets at every turn," Crytek explained in its announcement.

Crytek's director of production, David Bowman, said the company is transitioning to virtual reality so that it can continue to push for greater immersion in its games.

"Ever since Crytek was founded, we have been striving to build the most realistic, believable worlds we possibly can for players," Bowman said in the press release.

"Today's VR technologies are enabling us to bring together CryEngine's capabilities and our legacy in creating immersive gaming experiences like never before.

"The time we're spending in Robinson: The Journey as we develop it is transforming the way we think about games, and we can't wait until everyone has the chance to set foot in this universe for themselves."

Crytek is currently focusing on Warface and its CryEngine platform after giving up development of Homefront: The Revolution last year. In April, Crytek announced $50 million licensing deal with Amazon.
