D23 was this past weekend and with it came free stuff! I got my hands on Disney Infinity 3.0 Figures and here’s a review for your perusal. To start it off we have everybody’s second favorite snowman ever, Olaf!
OLAF (Toy Box Only Character) –
This guy was one of my most anticipated figures that wasn’t Star Wars related, and while I am an Olaf fan, it’s mostly because I can use him to entice my girlfriend into playing the game. I like Olaf, she LOVES Olaf. The figure comes in the purple packaging that is the theme for all Disney/Pixar properties in the game.
He has a very cute pose, reaching out for a warm hug, and a unique base that is different than the base that Anna & Elsa had when they were released in 1.0. Paint applications are spot on and he’s one of the most on model characters I’ve seen as a figure. I’ve seen footage of his gameplay and I find myself very drawn to wanting to play as him, just because having a snowman fight Darth Maul is just absurdly awesome.
DISGUST (Inside Out Playset + Toy Box) –
Disgust is the fourth figure from Inside Out that I’ve acquired, Fear being the only figure I need to complete the set. These figures have also translated quite well to the Infinity style and I really like their design. Her pose is in character and she is of course making a face that can only be described as “Blech”. Which is a good thing.
There are several paint applications as she has much more color variation than Olaf and the attention to detail is appreciated. I haven’t had a chance to play with her in the game yet but like her fellow emotions she has a unique skill set and a light up memory ball built into her base.
So far Anger and Sadness are my favorite emotions as figures but I feel my opinion is based on my impression of their characters from the movie. I know that the Inside Out game requires certain characters to get through certain levels so I do want them all and I’m happy to have her but I feel she’s my least favorite emotion, which in a way is fitting.
SAM FLYNN (Toy Box Only Character) –
During the 2.0 cycle there was a bit of controversy regarding the Tron figures. Sam and Quorra were digital only figures that were scrapped as physical figures during the later stages of the game’s development. There was an outcry #wewanttron, and thus the figures have arrived! Of course I feel they were going to arrive anyway but a good spin is a good spin.
I wasn’t among those totally heartbroken but I was looking forward to Sam Flynn. While I don’t think he deserves to be in the game before Tron himself or even Jeff Bridges, I do think he’s a pretty boss looking figure. His in-game abilities and moves look sick and the figure itself is fun to look at. He’s got a Batman vibe that I really dig.
He’s a Toy Box only character but there seems to be a lot more gameplay in the Toy Box for 3.0 that he can participate in. There’s a Toy Box Disc that is a dungeon crawler with plenty of combat and the return of Toy Box adventures, he’ll fit right in de-rezzing villains. I am excited to use him as one of my primary non-Star Wars characters. His physical figure has so many great details, from the texture on his shirt to the piping on his outfit. I may not have been a fan of the movie but you can’t knock its great designs (super fun soundtrack too).
DARTH VADER (All Star Wars playsets + Toy Box) –
Ralph McQuarrie comes to mind when I look at this figure and that’s what makes him so fun to look at. I love his pose, force choke at the ready. His lightsaber isn’t as menacing in the down position but having just seen A New Hope, I know that Darth Vader loves to have his lightsaber out just in case.
I love all the paint variation on him, from the glossy finish on his helmet to the different shades of black throughout his outfit, his paint applications are spot on and very on model. This version of Vader is bulky and imposing in a way that Vader usually isn’t in the movies but it adds to his gravitas. I’ve yet to fully experience his gameplay but one interesting tidbit of note is that Lucasfilm told the game designers that Vader is not to run in the game so he actually walks everywhere, probably in time to the Imperial March.
Overall these are great figures and I can’t wait for the rest and to just play the game. Disney Infinity 3.0 seems to be raising the bar in terms of gameplay, character selection, and design. Recommended to gamers and collectors of all ages!
