You waited patiently for your glimpse at never-before-seen footage from the final film of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, "The Dark Knight Rises," and it did not disappoint.
The movie's stars Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christian Bale took the stage at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards to briefly look back at everything that has come before this final chapter and then took one last look ahead before the movie hits theaters on July 20.
The first montage featured some of the most iconic images from both "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," including several scenes featuring Heath Ledger as the Joker, a sight which triggered an emotional shout-out from Bale.
Then it was time for the master himself, Christopher Nolan, to take the stage and present a ton of never-before-seen clips from his final trip to Gotham City. The director emphasized that his work over the past nine years was to tell a great story, and for that to be true, he needed to have a great ending. That is what Nolan is trying to do with "The Dark Knight Rises," which seems more and more like the definitive end to this Batman tale.
The footage opened with a scene featuring Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway as John Blake and Selena Kyle, respectively. Blake is a Gotham beat cop, and Kyle is the notorious burglar known as Catwoman, who insists, "A girl's got to eat."
The rest of the montage showed off a lot of new material featuring Batman, his nemesis Bane and the all-out war that's about to take place on the streets of Gotham.
One of the most pleasant surprises from the footage comes when a scared henchman is face-to-face with Selena Kyle in her Catwoman outfit. "He's behind you," she says, at which point, the crony turns around to find Batman upside down.
With all of its new reveals of Batman and the final struggle ahead of him, the package amounted to one amazing look at a movie we simply cannot wait to see.
Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. See what just happened at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards!
