Deadpool and Wolverine is on the way
Deadpool and Wolverine's release date is set for later this year, but it won't be surrounded by numerous other Marvel movies. In the past, Marvel would release multiple films per year. But in 2024, the company has just this one movie on the docket. The film previously known as Deadpool 3 is the only Marvel film coming in 2024 as part of Disney's strategy of releasing fewer, better films every year. Or at least that's the idea. In any event, the Deadpool series is a fan favorite, and with Hugh Jackman joining the film and a big cast of cameos, expectations are high. What is Deadpool and Wolverine about?
Deadpool and Wolverine got its first trailer during the Super Bowl in February, and this provided a first glimpse at the story and tone. Not much has been confirmed about the story so far, but the official synopsis says Wolverine is "recovering from his injuries" when he comes upon Deadpool. Together, they team up to "defeat a common enemy." It remains to be seen who that foe might be. The Super Bowl trailer revealed that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) is involved in some capacity, and that likely means there will be some multiverse elements to this story, as has become commonplace in recent Marvel films.
But I thought Wolverine died?
In 2017's Wolverine movie Logan, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine died. But Jackman's version of the character is alive and well in Deadpool and Wolverine because of the multiverse, or maybe that Deadpool and Wolverine takes place before Logan–we don't know. In any event, Jackman has said he's very proud of the movie Logan and the send-off for Wolverine, so he wanted to be careful that any future appearances as Wolverine wouldn't overrule what happened in Logan. "It's all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines," Jackman said. "Now we can go back because, you know, it's science [flashes airquotes]. So, I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too." Reynolds and Jackman have, for years, played up a fictional feud with some very silly videos, so it'll be fun to see the two together in a movie with Deadpool and Wolverine.
Who's in Deadpool and Wolverine?
Deadpool and Wolverine will feature a big cast of returning and new characters. There will be numerous cameos, according to comments from Karan Soni, who plays Dopinder. And they could be massive. For example, Jennifer Garner is rumored to come back as Elektra, while Sir Patrick Stewart might appear as Professor X. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, is said to appear in the film as Dazzler. Will Deadpool and Wolverine be rated R?
After Disney bought Fox, many wondered if the traditionally family-friendly Disney might make some changes to Deadpool specifically. But thankfully, that's not the case. Marvel's Kevin Feige confirmed the R rating back in 2021, saying that Reynolds is a "force of nature," and that he's excited to see the actor bring Deadpool to life once again. Before that, Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney would "continue that business" as it relates to R-rated Deadpool movies following the buyout of Fox. "We do believe there is room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content," he said in 2019. The first Deadpool and Wolverine trailer certainly alluded to things that might push the film's rating to R, including what could be the first utterance of "pegging" in Disney movie history.
Who's directing Deadpool and Wolverine?
Shawn Levy, who directed Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy, is directing Deadpool and Wolverine. The producers include Reynolds and Levy, as well as Kevin Feige and Lauren Shuler Donner. Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg, and Jonathon Komack Martin. The movie was written by Reynolds, along with series scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, with additional writing credits for Zeb Wells and Shawn Levy.
When does Deadpool and Wolverine come out?
Deadpool and Wolverine releases in theaters on July 26, 2024. Presumably it'll eventually also come to Disney+ and join the first two entries, but we don't know when that will be just yet.
