Disney Infinity sells 294,000 copies in US

Disney reveals two-week sales for Skylanders-style game in the United States, says company is “very pleased” with global performance.

Disney Infinity sold 294,000 starter packs in the United States during its first two weeks on sale, a representative for Disney Interactive confirmed with GamesIndustry International.

“Disney Infinity sales are off to a strong start, selling 294,000 starter pack units in the US during the last two weeks of August,” the spokesperson said. “We’re very pleased with the launch in both the U.S. and globally, and believe Disney Infinity is well-positioned for the critical holiday sales season.”

The Skylanders-style toys-to-life game nabbed the third spot in the NPD Group’s chart for August, finishing behind only Madden NFL 25 and Saints Row IV.

The success of Disney Infinity will have major implications for Disney Interactive’s financial viability, Disney CEO Bob Iger said in August.

“If Infinity does well, it bodes very well for the bottom line of this unit,” Iger said in February. “If it doesn’t do well, the opposite will be the case.”

Disney Infinity reportedly cost $100 million to develop. An anonymous source told the Wall Street Journal last month that along with the budget comes an enormous pressure for the game to be a success.

“It’s a Hail Mary with a tremendous amount of pressure to be a hit,” the source said.

Though early checks may show Disney Infinity is off to a strong start, the game will need to continue to sell well to catch Activision’s Skylanders series, which has minted over $1.5 billion in worldwide sales to date.
