Double Fine reveals Massive Chalice

Psychonauts, Brutal Legend developer asking for $725,000 on Kickstarter to fund turn-based feudal fantasy-themed strategy game.

Double Fine Productions--the studio that brought crowd-funding to prominence last year--has returned to Kickstarter for a new turn-based strategy game called Massive Chalice.

The studio is asking for $725,000 for the game by June 27. At press time, more than $84,000 had been donated from over 2,000 backers.

"If turn-based tactics and feudal fantasy had a lovechild, and that offspring founded a mighty century-spanning dynasty, it would be Massive Chalice," the game's description reads.

Double Fine designer Brad Muir, who created Iron Brigade and worked on Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, is heading up development on Massive Chalice. The game is inspired by tactical strategy games like XCOM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as noble families like those found in Game of Thrones.

Massive Chalice boasts two main layers: strategy and tactics. The game also features permadeath, in that players will need to choose between keeping heroes on the battlefield or retiring them to create a new generation of combatants.

The game is in its "earliest stages of development" at Double Fine for Windows, Mac, and Linux, using the developer's own Buddha Engine engine. It is expected to launch by September 2014.

Massive Chalice is the third project Double Fine is currently developing, adding to Dropchord and its Kickstarted point-and-click adventure game Broken Age.
