Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon Season 2 Character Guide

It is time to head back to Westeros! House of the Dragon returns with Season 2 on Sunday, June 16 for the next chapter of the Targaryen civil war. The house is divided into opposing sides, with Team Green consisting of Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and her son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), while Team Black includes Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith), as the family fights itself for control of the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra was announced as heir by her father, the deceased King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), when she was a teenager. His wife Alicent believes that he changed his mind on his deathbed and had her son Aegon take the throne instead. In Season 1, the two sides were readying resources to go to battle until Rhaenyra's second son was murdered in the Season 1 finale. We now enter Season 2 ready to go to legitimate war.

However, it's hard to go to war when you can't remember which Targaryens are which, and they all have the same silver hair. GameSpot is here to remind you of all of the major players in House of the Dragon Season 2 so you can dive right back into the politics, action, and dragon-fighting. So sit back and get caught up before House of the Dragon returns on Max.

Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen

Played by: Emma D'Arcy

Team Black

Rhaenyra is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and Viserys' eldest living child. She grew up with Alicent and the two were best friends until Alicent was married off to Viserys and became Rhaenyra's stepmother. Rhaenyra has three illegitimate sons she gave birth to while married to Laenor Velaryon (who ran away in Season 1) and she is passing them off as Targaryens. She also has twin boys with her second husband, Daemon Targaryen

Prince Daemon Targaryen

Played by: Matt Smith

Team Black

Daemon Targaryen is Viserys' brother and Rhaenyra's uncle. He was first married to Laena Velaryon (Savannah Steyn), but she died in Season 1. They had two daughters. He married Rhaenyra shortly afterwards, which would put him next to the Iron Throne if Rhaenyra is successful in recapturing her title.

Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower

Played by: Olivia Cooke

Team Green

Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Rhaenyra's childhood best friend, and the widow of King Viserys. She and Viserys had three children, including Aegon II, who Alicent helped usurp the throne after Viserys' death.

Ser Otto Hightower

Played by: Rhys Ifans

Team Green

Otter Hightower was the Hand of the King to Viserys and serves the same role to his grandson Aegon II. He is Alicent's father and has spent his entire life trying to get a Hightower on the throne. Preserving the prestige of his family and garnering power is his singular objective.

King Aegon II Targaryen

Played by: Tom Glynn-Carney

Team Green

Aegon II is the eldest son of Alicent and King Viserys. He is married to his sister Helaena and they have two children together. He usurped the throne from Rhaenyra at the urging of his mother and grandfather towards the end of Season 1. He has the same arrogance as Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) from Game of Thrones but does not have the same sadism streak.

Prince Aemond Targaryen

Played by: Ewan Mitchell

Team Green

Aemond Targaryen is Alicent and Viserys' second son. He lost an eye during an errant game with Rhaenyra's children when they were young and never fully got over it. He's ambitious, cunning and vengeful. He currently rides the biggest dragon in all of Westeros, Vhagar, which used to belong to his aunt, Laena Velaryon, before she died. He chased after Rhaenyra's second son Lucerys with Vhagar in the Season 1 finale but couldn't stop the dragon from eating Lucerys and potentially catalyzing the impending war.

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon

Played by: Henry Collett

Team Black

Jacerys is Rhaenyra's eldest son and her heir. On paper, he is also the son of Leanor Velaryon, but his birth father was a member of Rhaenyra's King's Guard. He's eager to impress his mother and defend his house and is married to his cousin/stepsister Baela Tagaryen (Bethany Antonia).

Lord Corlys Velaryon, "The Sea Snake"

Played by: Steve Toussaint

Team Black

Corlys is the head of the Velaryon family, which is even richer than House Lannister, and he also controls the largest navy in Westeros. He is married to Rhaenys Targaryen and his son was married to Rhaenyra. Corlys almost died in Season 1 but was saved from almost drowning and officially joined Team Black with his wife, Rhaenys (Eve Best).

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen

Played by: Eve Best

Team Black

Princess Rhaenys is the sister of King Viserys, Rhaenyra's aunt, and the wife of the sea snake. She was almost named queen by a council of Westeros elite, but lost the vote that made Viserys king by one. She's always thought that the Iron Throne should be hers, but has supported Rhaenyra in her plight for the throne so they may finally see a queen of Westeros. She is the mother of Laenor and Laena Velaryon, one of whom is presumed dead and the other we know to be deceased.

Lady Baela Targaryen

Played by: Bethany Antonia

Team Black

Baela Targaryen is the eldest daughter of Daemona and Laena Targaryen. She is a dragon rider and married to her cousin, Jacerys. If Rhaenyra is successful in reclaiming the throne for her lineage, Baela will become queen when Jacerys inherits the throne.

Lady Rhaena Targaryen

Played by: Phoebe Campbell

Team Black

Rhaenyra Targaryen, seen on the right next to her sister Baela, is Daemon and Laena's second daughter. She was betrothed to Lucerys Velaryon before his death at the end of Season 1.

Queen Helaena Targaryen

Played by: Phia Saban

Team Green

Heleana Targaryen is Alicent and Vicerys' only daughter. She is married to her brother, Aegon II, and for now is the queen of Westeros. She is considered mentally deficient by her peers because she speaks of visions they don't understand. She and Aegon have two children together.

Ser Criston Cole

Played by: Fabien Frankel

Team Green

Ser Criston Cole is the head of Aegon II's King's Guard. He initially came to King's Landing to win Rhaenyra's favor but betrayed her and went to Team Green in the latter half of Season 1. He is now loyal to Allicent and protecting the Hightower claim to the throne.

Lord Larys Strong

Played by: Matthew Needham

Team Green

Larys is House of the Dragon's Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen). He knows everyone's secrets and uses them to gain himself power within the kingdom. He has a soft spot for Alicent, and also an intense foot fetish. Do not trust him.

Ser Arryk Cargyll

Played by: Luke Tittensor

Team Green

Another twin alert! The Cargyll twins were members of the King's Guard. Arryck, seen here on the left, stayed with the King's Guard to defend Aegon II when he usurped the throne.

Ser Erryk Cargyll

Played by: Elliott Tittensor

Team Black

Erryck Cargyll used to be a member of the King's Guard in King's Landing but defected to defend Rhaenyra after Aegon II usurped the throne.

Mysaria

Played by: Sonoya Mizuno

Neutral

Mysaria was a prostitute in King's Landing and had plans to marry Daemon early in Season 1 before he ditched her to marry Laena Velaryon. She also peddles in secrets and plays whatever side she needs to in order to survive.

Alyn of Hull

Played by: Abubakar Salim

Team Black

Alyn is a sailor in Corlys' navy. He is the one that saved Corlys from drowning in Season 1.

King Viserys Targaryen

Played by: Paddy Considine

Team Black

Technically, Viserys doesn't have a team, because he died before the teams were created. He is the former king of Westeros, Rhaenyra's father, Daemon's brother, and Alicent's husband. He was considered a kind and compassionate ruler who kept peace within the seven realms. He was killed by a skin-eating disease that took years to take over his body. Viserys named Rhaenyra as his heir instead of his brother Daemon, and stood by that proclamation through his death.

Lucerys Valeryon

Played by: Elliot Grihault

Team Black

Lucerys Velaryon was Rhaenyra's second son. He was helping his family round up support for his mother's claim to the throne when he encountered Aemond Targaryen doing the same thing. The terse exchange led to a dragon race, with Aemond claiming he only wanted to scare Luce, but his dragon Vhaegar ate Luce and his dragon. Lucerys is dead at the beginning of Season 2, but his death is a major plot point in the actions that propel the sophomore season.
