I know this looks like a photo of Beyonce from last week, but it's actually from "House Of Style" in 2000.
Back before we all obsessed over Beyonce's circle sunglasses and then raced to pin our favorite pairs to Pinterest, post that collection to Facebook, tweet that collection and then Instagram a photo of ourselves snapped in the dressing room of Forever 21 making duck face in the affordable knock-off versions, we were obsessing over musicians, models and style on MTV -- specifically on MTV's "House Of Style," a must-watch behind-the-scenes fashion and music show, which began in 1989 with host Cindy Crawford, and was literally the only place in the world where Naomi Campbell dabbed herself in zit cream, Victoria Beckham (back when she was still "Posh" and still talked) went SHOPPING for underwear in a MALL while wearing CASUAL CLOTHING AND FROSTED LIPSTICK (!!!!), and where, 12 years ago, you could watch a teenaged Beyonce get dressed for the 2000 VMAs (while singing the Blockbuster Video theme song) and turn up like total twinsies with Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. (Don't even get me started on how I hoped and prayed for Todd Oldham to trick out my teenage bedroom in plush leopard print, or how hilariously '90s Jon Stewart and Cindy Crawford's hang sesh was.)
Back in the day (like, even before our real mailboxes were crammed with those AOL discs we all threw away) "House Of Style" was the progenitor of what style's become today -- a democratic, anything-goes celebration of high fashion, fast fashion, DIY style and the cult of celebrity and individuality.
If asked, I bet Victoria Beckham herself might even deny that this was Posh Spice on "House Of Style" back in 1997.
So, take a break from fashion blogging, posting outfit photos to Pose, and/or trolling Stan Wars for a minute, and check out the "House of Style" collection to watch more than 150 video clips and see thousands of photos from all 78 episodes of "House Of Style." It's kinda like sifting through MTV's online vintage museum. Plus, watch the trailer of MTV Style's brand-new documentary, "House Of Style: Music, Models & MTV," before the documentary premieres Tuesday, Aug. 7. Starting Oct. 9, MTV Style will premiere new online episodes of "House Of Style," hosted by a brand-new host who'll be unveiled on the red carpet at the 2012 VMAs on Thursday, Sept. 6!
And you thought bringing back "The Hills" was awesome.
