As production is halted everywhere, one independent, LA-based production company not only started production on a new series during quarantine, but did so to provide help to small businesses crushed by the pandemic.
The Nacelle Company (Netflix’s ‘The Toys That Made Us,’ ‘The Movies That Made Us’) is out beginning 5/29 with ‘A ToyStoreNearYou,’ a docuseries that takes you inside independent toy stores across the country. Created with self-filmed iPhone footage from toystore owners from dozens of states and even from Japan and other countries, the show goes deep into the nostalgia-and-plastic world of each individual shop, and how these businesses are trying to make it work while their stores are closed. The first episode, out on Amazon Prime on 5/29, covers the famed Billy Galaxy toystore in Portland, OR – and 40+ episodes will be released over the summer.
More than just a show about toys, it’s about the struggle and resilience of small businesses that fly under the radar of public awareness during a crisis like this (how often have you seen articles about “how to support your local toy stores during COVID?”). And the majority of proceeds will go back to the stores, too.
As content made pre-COVID continues to be released and eventually runs out, Nacelle is possibly the first company creating, shooting, and airing a new show during quarantine – made possible by the company’s weeks-early office closure/prep, and dedication to being a “bright light” of content during this time (read more in CEO Brian Volk-Weiss’ interview at GQ).
