Here’s some awesome news that I’m happy to post on behalf of my old friend Scott Rogers:
Thousand Oaks, CA – There’s a bug in Warner Brothers Interactive’s newest video game Scribblenauts Unmasked but it’s not the kind of bug that causes the game to crash. Instead, it’s Bedbug, the single-father superhero published by Bedbug Comics (https://www.facebook.com/mightybedbug) who appeared in his first issue this summer. Bedbug’s appearance in Scribblenauts Unmasked marks the world’s first official cross-over between an independent comic character and the popular DC Universe in a video game.
Cross-overs between superheroes are nothing new, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man first published in 1976, marked the first of many cross-overs between the DC Comics and Marvel Comics – the two major comic book publishers. But how did an independently published character like Bedbug end up appearing in DC Comic’s Scribblenauts Unmasked?
“I was going through treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and using my disability time to create the first issue of Bedbug (which can be purchased at www.mightybedbug.com). I was contacted by the president of 5th Cell, the developers of Scribblenauts Unmasked.” recalls Bedbug’s creator Scott Rogers. “He told me he had been following the story of my recovery online and asked if I would mind if Bedbug appeared in their next game. I was honored and thrilled, but I didn’t think it would actually happen.”
Scribblenauts Unmasked is a puzzle video game released by Warner Brothers Interactive for the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Microsoft Windows in which players solve puzzles with settings and characters from the iconic DC Comics universe. Although not a DC Comics created super hero, Scribblenauts Unleashed players can make Bedbug leap into action by typing “Bedbug” or “Buddy Sprang” – the hero’s secret identity – into the game’s database of over 2000 characters. “As a life-long DC Comics fan,” says Rogers “Seeing my creation Bedbug appear side-by-side with my favorite DC Comics characters like Batman and Superman is a huge thrill. I can’t wait for everyone to play with Bedbug in Scribblenauts Unleashed!”
