Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Good afternoon students both resident and visiting through Twitter! I’m @JGSHeadmistress, Kitty Pryde.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

It's time to begin our Live Twitter Event! Take your seats!

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:
Sorry to be starting a bit late. Par for the course here at the Jean Grey School it seems. ANYWAY...

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Today we have a special treat, and you’re going to get to sit in on Professor Paige Guthrie’s Mutant Art class.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

So without further adieu, I’m going to hand the reins of the official school Twitter account to Prof Guthrie.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Hi.

Kitty Pryde @JGSHeadmistress:

Introduce yourself, Paige.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Hi. I’m Professor Paige Guthrie. I teach Mutant Art.

Kitty Pryde @JGSHeadmistress:

Um, Paige, we’re live on Twitter, PLEASE, this sounded very interesting when you pitched it last week.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Hold on a second.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Ah, much better. Hi, everyone, I’m Paige Guthrie, and I am the lucky professor who gets to teach Mutant Art.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

The full title is “The History of Mutant Art: From Jumbo Carnation to Kenji Uedo” but it’s much more than just an Art History class.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Sure, we dig into mutant artists, their works, their goals, their techniques, but to really understand an artist, you need to make art.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

So last week, our assignment was to make a piece of art that we could then critique in class.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

So, here we are. Let’s do a quick roll call.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@GenesisHero?

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 art by Chris Bachalo
Genesis @GenesisHero:

Here, Professor.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@idie_okonkwo?

Idie @idie_okonkwo:

Here.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@_broodling_?

Broo @_broodling_

Present.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@_Anole_?

Anole @_Anole_:

Here.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@KidGladiator1?

Genesis @GenesisHero:

I saw his bodyguard carrying him unconscious across the lawn earlier.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Okay. @SANOTRULES?

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

HERE AND STOKED!

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

.@GlobHerman?

Glob Herman @GlobHerman:

I’m the gelatinous one over here in the corner.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

I know who you are, @GlobHerman. @QQuire?

Quentin Quire @QQuire:

Oh, I’m here, alright.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Then let’s get started, shall we? As an artist, your work should speak for itself, so only give the title of your work.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

From there the class will give comments for what it says to them. After that, you can explain your goals, etc…

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 art by Chris Bachalo
Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

How about @GenesisHero. Why don’t you go first?

Genesis @GenesisHero:

Sure. Here’s my work. It’s called "Ugly."

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

Dude, is that a super-powered goose?

Anole @_Anole_:

I like the rendering on the feathers.

Quentin Quire @QQuire:

A nursery rhyme? LAME.

Anole @_Anole_:

I like it. The Ugly Duckling story.

Quentin Quire @QQuire:

So pedestrian. Pardon me while I psychically barf.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

Constructive criticism, @QQuire.

Genesis @GenesisHero:

It’s okay, Professor. He’s just a jerk.

Genesis @GenesisHero:

Maybe it is lame, but you’re right it’s the ugly duckling. I guess I find stories of nature vs. nurture interesting.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

It’s very well done. How about @SANTORULES?

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

Aw, yeah. Here we go. All I need to do to show you this is turn around. It’s called LETS DO THIS

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 art by Chris Bachalo
Anole @_Anole_:

Tell me I’m not seeing what I’m seeing.

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

YOU’RE TOTALLY SEEING IT.

Genesis @GenesisHero:

Is that Iron Man?

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

Yup, TONY FREAKING STARK!

Anole @_Anole_:

...carved into your rear end?

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

I DID A SCULPTURE OF TONY STARK ON MY BUTT!

Idie @idie_okonkwo:

This can’t be moral. However, you really did a great job with the nose.

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

I can’t believe you, @SANTORULES. I’m not even giving out grades today and you get an F.

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

WORTH IT!

Jean Grey School @JeanGreySchool:

How about @idie_okonkwo?

Idie @idie_okonkwo:

Absolutely, Professor. It is called “Self Portrait.”

Rockslide @SANTORULES:

AAAAAHHHHH!

Anole @_Anole_:

That’s TERRIFYING!

Genesis @GenesisHero:

I don’t know, it’s pretty awesomely done, @idie_okonkwo.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I agree with lips over there.

Idie ‏@idie_okonkwo :

It is what is referred to as an inner self portrait. So, it is a monster, but it is a monster coming to peace.

Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

You sure are a bucket of sunshine, lady.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchoo:

Let’s talk after class, @Idie_Okonko. Next is @_Anole_

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 art by Chris Bachalo
Anole ‏@_Anole_:

Sure thing. It’s just titled “Sunset, May 4th”

Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

WHOAH! That’s not a painting. That’s a photo.

Anole ‏@_Anole_:

It's not! It’s a painting.

Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

NO WAY!

Idie ‏@idie_okonkwo:

That is truly beautiful, @_Anole_.

Rockslide ‏@SANTORULES:

Dude, you are SICK.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

That is one of the best paintings I’ve ever seen, @_Anole_.

Anole ‏@_Anole_:

It’s just a landscape, guys. I took a class one summer. Let’s not go overboard.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Zzzzzzzzz.

Anole ‏@_Anole_:

Okay, we can go a little more overboard.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Next is @GlobHerman.

Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

I didn’t do it.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

I’m surprised. Next up is @_broodling_! I understand you’ve prepared something exotic for us.

Broo ‏@_Broodling_:

Yes. It’s called “A Unicorn Flying Through a Rainbow Over Clouds Raining Diamonds.”

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Sounds exciting! Go ahead, let’s see.

Broo ‏@_Broodling_:

That was it. It’s mental art, a Rigellian artform creating images in other people’s minds.

Genesis ‏@GenesisHero:

Intriguing.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Oh. Well…it was…beautiful?

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Yeah, except we did all the work. Can we get to MY piece, please?

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Sure. Amaze us, @QQuire

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

At last—let the unveiling begin!

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

I told you, you didn’t have to cover it with a sheet. This is an informal showing.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

I call it “The Future of Mutant Kind.”

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

VOILA!

Genesis ‏@GenesisHero:

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 art by Chris Bachalo
Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

AW, WHY?

Idie ‏@idie_okonkwo:

Saints preserve me!

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Ok, so…that’s a…full figure…nude…self-portait.

Rockslide ‏@SANTORULES:

That tops me. Dude, you’ve got some…uh…you know. Nerve.

Broo ‏@_Broodling_:

Ah, I see, friend @QQuire! But from what my studies have shown, the scale of the relative anatomical parts seems mildly skewed.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Depends on the specimen, sleazoid.

Glob Herman ‏@GlobHerman:

Nobody wants to see that!

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Let’s not insult someone for their expression.

Anole ‏@_Anole_:

No, he’s right—NOBODY wants to see that.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Come on, kids—let’s keep the discussion to the MEANING of the piece. What’s it all about?

Broo ‏@_Broodling_:

Given the physical irregularity, I’d say it postulates the future of mutant kind lies in elephantitis and deformity.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

That’s…one possibility. What do you think, @idie_okonkwo?

Idie ‏@idie_okonkwo:

I can’t look at this piece, professor—another glance and I’ll be going to hell, for certain.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Aw, @idie_okonkwo, my dear…if you’re gonna go, there’s no better way.

Wolverine & The X-Men #10 cover by Chris Bachalo
Genesis ‏@GenesisHero:

I think it’s an expression of the artists’ inner fear.

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

Interesting. What do you mean?

Genesis ‏@GenesisHero:

He’s plagued by the knowledge that he is NOT the most important person on Earth. Hence a work of “self-aggrandizement” to reassure himself.

Genesis ‏@GenesisHero:

But he’s incapable of producing a work with any truth in it because he’s not being truthful with himself.

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

Ok, that is a COMPLETE misinterpretation! For your information, I was showing my complete lack of RESPECT for any institutionalized art!

Quentin Quire ‏@QQuire:

The only true art can come from the outsider!

Jean Grey School ‏@JeanGreySchool:

And we'll stop there. Thank you all for joining us for Mutant Art! See you next time!
