Users still required to use a Wii Remote in order to play Wii games displayed on the GamePad.
Nintendo's latest Wii U update allows users to play original Wii titles from the Wii U GamePad, the company has said.
Update 4.0.0 will output video and sound from Wii games through the GamePad, although the games must still be played with the Wii Remote.
Other features in the update include Dolby® Pro Logic® II support, the option to automatically download demos through SpotPass, and multiple improvements to the system's web browser.
Nintendo also says the update brings "further improvements to overall system stability."
More information about the 4.0.0 update can be found on Nintendo's site.
