While most award shows are about glittery red carpet arrivals and mysterious committees electing winners based on some sort of barely understood algorithm, the mtvU Woodies Awards are 100 percent about the fans who go hardest for their favorite artists. (Woah, unintentional rhyme!)
And speaking of rhymes, tonight's Breaking Woodie winner, Machine Gun Kelly, has fans so completely devoted to winning him a big chunk of mtvU Wood that they "took the time to vote over and over again 'til your fingers got carpal tunnel," he said. Not bad for a kid who went from putting out mixtapes in Cleveland to sleeping on his mom's manager's couch to winning over the Apollo Theater and then Diddy, who signed him to Bad Boy, to winning the fan-voted MTV News' Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 (beating out Mac Miller), to the cover of XXL's Freshman Class issue. And he's still a month away from turning 22.
Machine Gun Kelly's got a lot celebrate, and backstage after his Woodies win in Austin, a genuinely ecstatic MGK continued his winning streak in the press tent, where the mile-a-minute spitter praised his non-stop fan base for earning him his stripes and called his Woodies win the highlight of his year.
Watch Machine Gun Kelly thank his fans for his Breaking Woodie win after the jump:
"The beauty of Machine Gun Kelly winning an award honestly is the fact that industry-wise we're not that accepted, so for this to be a fan-based award based off their votes, it just truly shows their power and why they matter," he said. "Critics don't mean anything. The fact that Machine Gun Kelly isn't critically acclaimed and we just go against the grain, this just proves everything that I've been preaching since day one to be true. So to all the fans out there who took the time to vote over and over again 'til your fingers got carpal tunnel, thank you! Thank you dude. You have made my year. Lace up!"
