The Glyph Awards, begun in 2005 under the guidance of comics journalist Rich Watson, seek to honor comics that represent, according to their description, “the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color from the preceding calendar year.” This year several Marvel creators count themselves thrilled to garner nominations for their work.
“This makes me very happy that our portrayal of Luke Cage is being embraced so much,” Jeff Parker says of both his nomination as writer of THUNDERBOLTS and Cage’s nomination as Best Male Character “I think he's one of the great characters of modern comics and I love contributing to his legacy.”
“Both Sara [Pichelli] and I were just thrilled with the nominations,” says Brian Michael Bendis, honored for Story of the Year for ULTIMATE COMICS: SPIDER-MAN #1, Miles Morales as Character of the Year, and, like Parker, as Best Writer. “Obviously Miles means the world to us and our goals for him as a character are very very high. So the acknowledgment of our efforts made our day.”
Sara Pichelli, Bendis’s partner on ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN, who shares the aforementioned Story of the Year and Best Male Character, and scored a Best Artist nominee herself, matches his excitement over the news.
“The ULTIMATE COMICS: SPIDER-MAN re-launch, especially the creation of Miles Morales have been an important step in the comicdom,” she enthuses, “I feel very lucky to be part of that event, and the nomination makes me want to do more and better!”
Marvel also secured two nominations in the Best Cover category for ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #4 as illustrated by Kaare Andrews and Kyle Baker’s DEADPOOL MAX #7.
The Glyph Comics Awards ceremony occurs during the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention in Philadelphia. The ceremony will take place on May 18 at the African American Museum, at the conclusion of the first day of the show.
