Despite "strong" internal support, Capcom reportedly canned FPS from Metroid Prime vets during greenlight meetings.
A Mega Man first-person shooter was not meant to be. Sources have told Polygon that Capcom canceled this project--codenamed Maverick Hunter--during greenlighting meetings in 2010.
The game was in development at Austin, Texas-based Armature Studio, the outfit founded by Metroid Prime veterans that is currently working on Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate for the 3DS and PlayStation Vita. It reportedly had the blessings of original Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune.
Unlike some of the classic Mega Man titles, Maverick Hunter was said to be thematically inspired by the more mature Mega Man X franchise. It was also to stay true to core concepts and include a reimagined X-Buster arm cannon, among other features.
Though Armature Studio had a playable build of Maverick Hunter up and running, its existence was a short-lived six months around the beginning of 2010. Sources said it "showed promise" but was ultimately considered a "significant gamble" and ultimately canceled in the months before Inafune left Capcom later in 2010.
Maverick Hunter joins a group of other canceled Mega Man games that includes Mega Man Online, Mega Man Universe, and Mega Man Legends 3.
