Mojang estimates total sales of open-world creation game hit 9.2 million across PC, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android versions.
Minecraft has struck gold, millions of times over. Developer Mojang revealed today on Twitter that total sales of the open-world creation game across all platforms are estimated to be close to 9.2 million.
Creator Markus Persson said via Twitter that sales of the PC version of Minecraft alone stand at 6 million. Minecraft is available on a range of platforms outside of the computer, including iOS and Android devices, where the game has sold 700,000 copies as of January.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sold 400,000 copies during its first day, recouping development costs in just 60 minutes. It went on to sell 1 million copies in five days, on its way to becoming the fastest-selling Xbox Live title in history. During the week of May 14, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition tallied more unique users than Activision's shooter juggernaut Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox Live.
Outside of games, Minecraft has expanded in areas few other titles ever have. A two-day Minecraft convention dubbed Minecon hit Las Vegas in November, and an official Lego Minecraft set is due out this summer.
