Speedy Ortiz channel '90s Massachusetts alt-rock in their latest track, "Ka-Prow!"

Alt-rock pioneers Speedy Ortiz don't just channel a certain flannel-loving decade in their quiet/loud, Massachusetts-in-the-'90s single "Ka-Prow!" -- the Northampton four-piece also put their influences where their production is. The band's first single, "Taylor Swift b/w Swim Fan," was recorded with Paul Kolderie (Pixies), and its follow-up EP, Sports, with Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore), whom they're also working with on a forthcoming album. A few of the tracks from that session will be released later this month, including the screeching/gentle push and pull of "Ka-Prow!"

Speedy frontwoman Sadie Dupuis first wrote "Ka-Prow!" while teaching a songwriting class for teenagers at a summer camp: "The basic concept of the class was that in an hour period you had to write a song based on a theme of the day, either lyrical or musical or both." Then, at the end of the day, everyone would present their songs. "On this particular day the lesson was to 'write a song that explodes.' Now that I think about it, this song was probably not appropriate to play in front of kids."

The track originally appeared on a solo cassette called Cop Kicker EP, where Dupuis played all the instruments. But hearing "Ka-Prow!" performed by a full band was a treat, she said. "A), because I suck at drums and b) the song is so much better now." ("Ka-Prow!," by the way, is the name of a Thai restaurant in Austin that Dupuis tried to get a job at a few years ago, but to no avail. Their loss.)

Unfortunately, with the '90s revivalism in full swing, the band is going to get lumped in with that movement whether they like it or not.

"We're like, 'OMG no moar '90s PLZ,"" Dupuis joked. "We're not decade supremacists. Of course we have major influences from that time, but I don't really understand why any current band that has a guitar in it is considered '90s unless they're, like, Sleigh Bells. Last night at the Pissed Jeans show [in Boston, where the band played support], someone asked me totally earnestly if we had heard of Nirvana, and I was like, 'Nah.' Of course it's nice when sound guys play Polvo after we play."
