Get lost in Ilan Rubin/The New Regime's dark "Daydream."

You may not know who Ilan Rubin is yet, but a lot of your favorite bands certainly do. The California multi-instrumentalist has spent time behind the drum kit for the likes of Angels & Airwaves and Lostprophets, and is currently the touring drummer for Paramore and Nine Inch Nails. That is a lot of songs to keep track of, so kudos to Rubin for having any space left to write some pretty cool tunes of his own, like this track, "Daydream," from his solo project, The New Regime.

As you might expect from some of his day jobs, Rubin's music is a mix of dark textures and expansive choruses. "Daydream" sounds like he's pulling from a few other classic rock bands as well; we dig that grinding, bluesy Depeche Mode riff that anchors the song, and the hooky, The Verve-like vocals. Rubin, who plays all of the instruments in the project, is releasing a series of EPs in the upcoming months. The first, on which "Daydream" appears, is called Exhibit A, and it will be out on May 7.

"Everything is turned around/ I don't want to be hanging around," he sings. "I don't want it your way, but I can't have it my way."  Actually, it sounds like he can.
