David Bowie and Tilda Swinton battle fame monsters in the condiment aisle.
With one comeback single down and a new album due in March, we're still wondering: What exactly has David Bowie been doing over the last 10 years? In his new video, "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)," the glam-rock god provides one possible explanation. "We have a nice life," he and Tilda Swinton (!) tell each other in the luckiest grocery store in the world, but their time as an average couple is soon haunted by ripped-from-the-tabloids celebrities. Are their visions meant as mental illness? Ghosts? Metaphors? "Twin Peaks"? Given Bowie's low profile over the last decade, him exploring the battle between vegetable-aisle, mustard-cardigan domesticity and hard-partying stardom's anything but crazy.

The video includes homages to Bowie's many-faced past, with a stand-in singer rocking the look of his Thin White Duke '70s days. Meanwhile, Swinton transforms into a punk puppet, all wild hair and jerky arms as she carves through an unfortunate plated animal. (Don't let Morrissey see this video, btw.) By contrast to Bowie's gentle comeback single, "Where Are We Now?," "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" opens with 2 minutes of steely drums and ominous guitar blasts before bursting into an upbeat rocker.
