No Rest For The Wicked Guide: How To Buy A House

Isometric action-adventure RPG No Rest For The Wicked mixes a few genres together, but like its greatest inspiration, the soulslike genre, it can be a little opaque about how its systems work. While you'll quickly find ways of gathering crafting materials and find you can items like crafting benches and furniture relatively early on, it's not clear for quite a few hours exactly where you can put them or how they work. The short answer: You need a house.

You can get your own house in Sacrament, No Rest for the Wicked's hub town. However, there are some specific steps you have to complete to unlock the ability to purchase a place to live, and the game doesn't tell you what they are. In fact, it's fully possible to get swept up in continuing the main story of No Rest for the Wicked and delay your chance to own real estate on the plagued island of Sacra. Owning a house has serious benefits, though, since you can add furniture like a bed that can give you a major resting bonus or crafting tables to use the many materials you'll pick up on your adventures.

Here's what you need to know to get a house in Sacrament as early as possible.

Make Your Way To Sacrament

First, of course, you'll need to get into Sacrament itself. Once you're in the town, there's a whole lot you can do, so make it a priority to explore and get a sense of the place's scope. Eventually, the story will direct you to make your way to the Nameless Path, but you'll want to delay that for a while.

Find Winnick

After you've been to the Rookery, talked with the Watcher, and slept, you'll need to find a local bigwig named Winnick. This town leader has a quest for you called "Of Rats and Raiders," and completing it is key to getting in good with Sacrament so you can put down roots. Look for Winnick to the north of the Rookery, past the War Room. You're in the right place when you see prisoners in wagon cages.

Get The Cage Key

Head up to the gallows near where Rattagan is being held. You'll overhear two guards talking about a third who's drunk and has the key you need. He's down by the fountain, to the north and below where Rattagan is being held. Bring it back and release Rattagan, and he'll ask you to meet him in the Shallows.

Chase Down Darak

Winnick's quest sends you out to deal with a leader of a local band of rebels, the Risen, who are planning to attack Sacrament. Your job is to put an end to their leader, Darak. Head to the Orban Glades and make your way to the north end of the area; you'll need to use the elevator near the drawbridge of Mariner's Keep to get to where Darak and his forces are waiting.

Eventually, you'll challenge Darak in combat. He's a big guy with a huge sword and a long reach, and he's backed up by a few Risen soldiers, which can make this a tough fight. A helpful strategy early on is to use Darak against his men. No Rest for the Wicked includes friendly fire for enemies, and Darak isn't particularly careful about his sweeping attacks, so you can bait him to swing away and kill his backup pretty easily. When that's done, focus on quick hit-and-run attacks against Darak. He's fast for such a big guy, but you can dodge through his attacks pretty easily. His vertical strikes also have a fairly long wind-up, making it possible to anticipate and parry them. When you see him draw his sword back behind him, as soon as it starts on the downward part of the swing, hit the parry button to put Darak on his back foot and open him up to a quick counterattack.

You can beat Darak here, but you won't kill him--he'll run off at the last second. Head back to Sacrament to see Winnick again for the next step.

Talk To Rattigan

Once you're back in Sacrament, return to where the prisoners are being held. You should talk to everybody, but the one you're looking for is named Rattigan, and you'll find him on the left side of the area, a little south of where Odessa is kept in the tower cell. Rattigan will warn you that Darak's got a bigger plan cooking, and will offer to lead you to him if you help him escape.

Head up to the gallows near where Rattigan is being held, where you'll overhear two guards talking about a third who's drunk and has the key you need. He's down by the fountain, to the north and below where Rattigan is being held. Bring it back and release Rattigan and he'll ask you to meet him in the Shallows.

Access The Sewers

Head back out to the Shallows--you're looking for the area just below the bridge that leads you into Mariner's Keep. You can get there pretty easily by taking the ladder down from Orban Glades right before the drawbridge to Mariner's Keep, then dropping into the water. Make your way south around the wall and you'll find a big green tunnel leading into the sewers. Rattigan will appear to tell you you're on the right track, and you'll need to make your way inside and clear the place out to find Darak. The sewer is a pretty big and challenging dungeon, though, so you might need to level up some to finish it--level 10 or 11 should make it fully doable if you're having trouble.

Defeat Darak The Torn

When you finally reach the end of the sewer dungeon, you'll face Darak again. As you might have guessed based on all the mutated Torn enemies you've fought through to get to this point, Darak has also been infected with the plague. There are two phases to this fight, and Darak gets a whole second health bar in the second phase, so plan your use of food accordingly. He hits hard, but as with the first fight, his attacks are generally pretty easy to dodge and parry before he transforms. In the second phase, watch out for the tentacles--if he points his sword at you, roll out of the way of the big attack coming your way, and try to get behind him to land a few attacks whenever he tries to lay into you.

When you kill Darak, Winnick will show up and thank you for defending Sacrament. Having proven your willingness to fight for the town, he'll name you a citizen, and you'll unlock the Player Housing feature.

Buy A House

With "Of Rats and Raiders" handled, you can return to Sacrament and finally buy your house. There are three available, but they're not cheap--the first costs 30 Silver, the second 25, and the last 20.

Once you've got a house, you can build and buy items to add to it from Sacraments vendors. Grabbing things like an Anvil allows you to craft items in your house. This is a whole lot more convenient than using the ones that are available at the vendor shops, because you'll need to visit Sacrament's Builder and upgrade each one in order to unlock them. You can also centralize all your crafting stuff in one place for easier use, and build chests and other furniture to deal more easily with an overflowing inventory.
