Professor Layton developer Level 5 starts work on PS4 game

Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni developer says it might be able to announce the new title soon.

Japanese developer Level 5, creator of Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, has confirmed it has started work on a PlayStation 4 title.

In an interview with Japanese website Nikkei Trendy (translated by Gematsu), studio boss Akihiro Hino revealed that the studio is in the early stages of developing for Sony’s next-gen console.

"It's still in the planning stages, but we are also working on a PlayStation 4 title," Hino said, adding that the company "might be able to announce it soon."

The Japanese studio is also looking at the networking capabilities of the next-gen console. "PlayStation 4 is next-gen hardware built with the network in mind," said Hino, "so more than graphics performance and specs, we need to think about communication--how to use the network features."

During the interview, Hino also revealed that he thought Sony Japan had set the right price for the PS Vita, and believes that a price cut alone wouldn't be enough to encourage more sales. "You also have to simultaneously release strategic titles. I think there is a huge amount of anticipation around what those titles will be," he said.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch topped the UK charts when it launched in January, and has sold over 500,000 copies in Japan.

The last 3DS Professor Layton title, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, was released across Europe and North America in October 2012. The next game in the series, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies, was released in Japan at the end of February.
