Sony no longer shipping prolific system in island nation following launch in March 2000; no word on halts for other regions.
Sony has ceased shipping PlayStation 2 units in Japan, according to a Famitsu report (via Kotaku). Once the current stock in the island nation is gone, it will not be resupplied.
The PS2 launched in Japan during March 2000 and to date has shipped more than 150 million units worldwide. More than 10,000 titles are available for the console, and Sony has sold in excess of 1.52 billion PS2 games since launch.
PS2 units continue to be produced and sold in other regions. No mention was made concerning when this may change. Though Sony has ceased PS2 shipments in Japan, the company continues to develop titles for the platform.
