Welcome to Buzzworthy's "The Week In Pop," where we round up new album releases, talk show musical guests, and TV performances by your favorite pop stars and more (so you don't have to).
This week, Queens Of The Stone Age return after nearly six years with ...Like Clockwork. Catch them on Wednesday and Thursday's "Late Show With David Letterman." Also, The Maine release their fourth studio album, Forever Halloween, and Sleeping With Sirens drop their third full-length record, Feel. Meanwhile, Capital Cities make their full-length debut with In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery (catch them on Thursday's "Conan"), and Portugal. The Man release Evil Friends, their seventh studio effort (they're on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Wednesday). On TV, "2013 CMT Music Awards" airs Wednesday with performances by Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Hunter Hayes, and more. Broken Social Scene with Feist also return from their 2011 hiatus on Thursday's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." The week caps off with "67th Annual Tony Awards," where Cyndi Lauper and Trey Anastasio are among the nominees.
NEW ALBUM RELEASES
+ Queens Of The Stone Age, ...Like Clockwork: For Josh Homme and Co.'s sixth studio album, original bassist Nick Oliveri returns and Dave Grohl keeps the beat on most of the tracks (he last drummed on QOTSA's 2002 album Songs For The Deaf). Homme told MTV News the band went through a dark period, which informed their new material. "This record was like finding a way out from there to where we are now... so this is the most current, real, raw thing that we've ever made," he explained. QOTSA released a series of creepy, nightmarish animated videos that illustrate the dire album themes. Watch "My God Is The Sun," "I Appear Missing," "If I Had A Tail" and "Keep Your Eyes Peeled" via Rolling Stone. QOTSA enlists several guests on the record, including his wife Brody Dalle, frequent collaborator Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor, Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner, Elton John and Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears.
+ The Maine, Forever Halloween: On the Arizona quintet's fourth studio effort, and second album they've self-funded and released independently, they juxtapose '90s alt-rock sonic flavors against more soul-searching, solemn lyrics, such as on the Buzzworthy Obsession track, "Happy," where frontman John O'Callaghan sings of self-doubt (as opposed to what the song name implies). Produced by The Raconteurs' Brendan Benson, the 12-song set may deal with melancholic themes, like relationships gone awry ("These Four Words") and disillusionment ("Love & Drugs," "Birthday in Los Angeles"), but the hooks and emotive choruses make feeling bad something of a good thing.
+ Sleeping With Sirens, Feel: Last we heard from the Michigan-based emo-metal-pop outfit Sleeping With Sirens, they dropped their "Roger Rabbit" video for the acoustic and R&B-driven track that appeared on last summer's acoustic EP If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack. For their third full-length album, they plug their axes back in for their 12-song set. Check out the driving, anthemic kiss-off "Congratulations," their single "Low," and "Alone" featuring MGK. Also: Catch the guys on Vans Warped Tour, which commences June 15 in Seattle.
Check out more new album releases, upcoming TV appearances, and performances after the jump.
+ Capital Cities, In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery: After making internet waves with their 2012 eponymous EP, Los Angeles electro-pop duo Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian expand on their synth-loving sound that tips to early dance genres like disco, but with a slick modern update with their new material. Their full-length debut includes the five songs from their EP along with seven new tunes. Watch their "Safe And Sound" video, where dancers and dance styles from cinema's various eras glide along with Capital Cities' contemporary beat.
+ Portugal. The Man, Evil Friends: MTV PUSH alums and psychedelic pop-rock group Portugal. The Man turn to producer Danger Mouse for their seventh full-length effort. Highlights include the acoustic-led "Plastic Soldiers," the rollicking title track, the catchy "Hip Hop Kids," and the sweeping "Smile." Watch their trippy "Purple Yellow Red And Blue" video, and stream the entire 12-song album, Evil Friends, via Portugal. The Man's Soundcloud.
