New Cloak and Dagger #1 Digital Comic Released

One of Marvel’s most mysterious teams is getting a brand new limited digital series! CLOAK AND DAGGER #1, available today and written by Dennis Hopeless with art by David Messina, will pick up during a bumpy time in Cloak and Dagger’s relationship. But like most powerful pairs, Tyrone and Tandy won’t be apart for very long.

We spoke to Dennis Hopeless to get an inside look on what’s in store for Cloak and Dagger!

Marvel.com: You’ve written for teams as well as individual characters. What was it like writing for two characters who are so different but so intertwined?

Dennis Hopeless: CLOAK AND DAGGER sort of splits the difference between writing a solo character and writing a team. When you’re writing about a single hero you can tell the story from inside their head. There’s one POV, and that perspective drives the story. Team books are often more of an ensemble. The spotlight moves around and the team dynamic is a bigger part of the story than any single point of view.

With CLOAK AND DAGGER, we’re telling the story from two very different perspectives at the same time. Tyrone and Tandy are fundamentally intertwined characters, like you say, but they see the world through different lenses. It’s been a lot of fun playing with that shifting perspective. We let the reader into each of their heads, sometimes even showing the same scene from two different angles. Just like in life, it’s the differences that propel the drama.

Marvel.com: What has it been like seeing David Messina interpret your script into art?

Dennis Hopeless: David’s style is big, bombastic, and super heroic. This is very much a psychological thriller. Like all the best Cloak and Dagger stories, it crawls down some narrow alleys and gets real dark. David’s art brings some much needed light and life to that. I love it.

Marvel.com: Cloak and Dagger have not only had their powers since they were teenagers, but they’ve been a duo for the same amount of time. Where does this relationship stand when we meet them in CLOAK AND DAGGER #1?

Dennis Hopeless: The current state of Cloak and Dagger’s relationship is one of the main driving forces behind this story. When we open, they’re further apart than ever, and the new status quo is still uncomfortable for everyone. Then old memories crop up, like old memories always do, and they’re yanked back together. It’s a lot of fun because we get to dive into their long history together. We spend some time with them in the early days when their powers and partnership were both still new and terrifying.

Marvel.com: Can you tell us anything about the “dangerous threat from their past” that is coming back? Is this series’ villain someone against whom Cloak and Dagger are seeking revenge?

Dennis Hopeless: That’s the old memory I was referring to. Tandy is working a murder case and spots something in a crime scene that brings back long forgotten teenage memories. Our villain sort of crawls up out of those memories… all of which is complicated by the fact that Cloak and Dagger are estranged. It’s a whole big tangled mess.

Marvel.com: Because they got their powers in such a scary way, do you feel like they feel resentment towards their powers? Do you think they’ve had long enough to accept them?

Dennis Hopeless: I think Tyrone and Tandy would each answer that question very differently. Dagger has embraced her powers and role as Super Hero in a way Cloak probably never will. To Tyrone, the Darkforce will always be a sort of curse. He uses it for good to the best of his ability, but it’s not something that gives him joy.

Marvel.com: Cloak and Dagger are coming back to address a mutual threat. Do you feel like there is any world in which they could truly separate for good?

Dennis Hopeless: They’re trying their best to do just that. So far it’s not going terribly well, but I guess we’ll find out.

CLOAK AND DAGGER #1 is available in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop, Comixology, and on the Amazon Kindle starting today!

The History of Spider-Man: 2015

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe and the web-slinger is now back on the silver screen once again in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War”! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story…

One of Spider-Man’s greatest foes, Carnage, became “inverted” in AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #4 due to the Red Skull’s machinations, as well as Captain America and other heroes. In AXIS #5, Spidey escaped his friends’ evil actions, but Apocalypse showed up to make things worse. The webslinger helped gather former villains to save the day in AXIS #6, and he joined with Deadpool to stop Apocalypse’s “gene bomb” in AXIS #7. The heroic Carnage actually stopped the bomb in AXIS #8, while Spidey fought the X-Men until everything could be put back the way it should be in AXIS #9.

As Spidey’s universe prepared for an incursion by another universe in SECRET WARS #1, he boarded Reed Richards’ “life raft” with other heroes to escape the cataclysm. Seemingly years later, the raft opened up on a planet called “Battleworld” in SECRET WARS #2 and our hero learned its ‘god” was none other than Doctor Doom. Spider battled another group stranded there, the Cabal, in SECRET WARS #4, until Dr. Strange scattered him and his teammates to the far corners of the planet when Doom took notice.

Peter, along with fellow Spider-Man Miles Morales, sought the planet’s power source in SECRET WARS #6, but found the all-powerful Molecule Man instead. The final war with Doom’s forces kicked off in SECRET WARS #8, and after his defeat by Reed Richards in SECRET WARS #9, Peter welcomed Miles to his rebuilt universe as the second official Spider-Man.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

After a successful run-in with Spider-Man, Cloak and Dagger were given their own four-issue limited series. This book was unique because it didn’t focus on costumed heroes and villains, but instead on the pair’s crusade against drug dealers.

STRANGE TALES (1987)
Bill Mantlo, Brett Blevins

Cloak and Dagger paired up with Doctor Strange for STRANGE TALES! This series was significant because the duo finally got a nemesis—Mister Jip, an evil mystic tied to the Kamar Taj, who kicks off conflict by deceiving Cloak.

Terry Austin, Dan Lawlis, P. Craig Russell

The first issue of THE MUTANT MISADVENTURES OF CLOAK AND DAGGER series has Dagger blind; writer Terry Austin, with help from the American Foundation for the Blind, was able to show an accurate impact of the impairment not only on how it affected heroics but for blind people’s everyday lives.

He’s Back, Bub

“If you come back from the dead, it should mean something.”

Following a global search that has unsettled the fabric of the Marvel Universe, the most dangerous hero in existence will return on September 19.

The final piece of a Wolverine trilogy years in the making, following DEATH OF WOLVERINE and HUNT FOR WOLVERINE, the RETURN OF WOLVERINE marks the beginning of a new—and very different—chapter in the storied history of Logan Howlett.

Return of Wolverine #1 cover by Steve McNiven
Return of Wolverine art by Adam Kubert

Following his death in 2014, the signature sound of popping claws went silent, and the hero’s body was interred for remembrance and respect. And then it went missing.

Immediately, the Super Heroes of the Marvel Universe convened, before separating into four teams hell-bent on unraveling the mystery of the disappearance. Starting with HUNT FOR WOLVERINE, and then in ADAMANTIUM AGENDA, CLAWS OF A KILLER, MYSTERY IN MADRIPOOR, and WEAPON LOST, the search began. And the shocking conclusion of this manhunt leaves Wolverine changed forever.

Brought to life by the team that originally sent him to his death, writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven dive claws first into this new beginning.

“Wolverine’s body has been missing. The entire Marvel Universe has been looking for him, because he’s a very important part of the Super Hero puzzle. And at long last, he will be found,” says Soule. “I thought this was a real opportunity to do things that would make him feel new and fresh in a way; if you come back from the dead, it should mean something. One of the outwardly physical manifestations of that is that now, from time to time, his claws—once they’re popped—they can heat up. They can get really hot.”

The five issue limited series kicks off with RETURN OF WOLVERINE #1, by Charles Soule and Steve McNiven, on September 19!
