Peter’s old girlfriend Deb Whitman published a tell-all book about their time together in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #14, and when the Vulture attacked a bookstore she appeared in for a signing in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #15, Spidey swung in to break his binding in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #16. Across town, the final, sprawling battle between Captain America’s rogue heroes and Iron Man’s government-sanctioned forces broke out in CIVIL WAR #7, while elsewhere the Kingpin sent an assassin to eliminate Mary Jane and Aunt May in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #537.

The webslinger arrived home from Captain America’s surrender to the authorities to witness May shot by an assassin in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #538. He donned his old black costume to reflect his mood on the hunt for the shooter in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #539, and May ended up in the hospital on the verge of death. To confuse the situation further, strange, inexperienced Spider-Mans began appearing in the city in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #35, a student of Peter’s got involved in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #36, and Spidey faced off against Mr. Hyde to learn the truth behind it all in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #37.

Gail Simone Lines up Her Domino

Domino is getting her own series—and luck had nothin’ to do with it!

On April 11, writer Gail Simone and artist David Baldeón are placing Neena Thurman in the sights of the villain known as Topaz. Domino’s mutant ability might be able to manipulate probability, but it’s gonna take more than that to get her out of a few tight corners.

Marvel.com spoke with Simone about her love of mercenaries and the allies Neena will be taking with her on this ride.

Marvel.com: How does it feel to be giving Domino her own series?

Gail Simone: Oh, it feels great. She’s always been such a fun, energetic character. It was a very impulsive move on my part to take the book, the editor asked out of the blue, we’d never spoken before, and I started thinking, and said yes the next day, which I never do! Within a couple days, we had the great David Baldeón on board, it just all feels meant to be. A friend at Marvel said that “Domino was waiting for you,” which is wildly flattering, when it feels the other way around; I was waiting for her.

Domino #1 cover by Greg Land

Marvel.com: What was the first thing you knew you wanted to explore with this character?

Gail Simone: Karma, man, karma. Seriously, no one beats the house odds forever. She’s being playing the world on Cheat Mode—that cannot come at no cost. Aside from that, I love the setting she’s in. I’ve been away from Marvel a long time, and I haven’t gotten to attach much to the overall mutant storyline, so we made sure that DOMINO has mercenaries and mutants. Because I’ve been away for a while, I wanted to cut loose, you know?

Marvel.com: Can you describe some of the dangers Neena will be facing in this comic?

Gail Simone: There are two right away. One is mysterious—an old man with a connection to Neena that she didn’t know about. The other is the deadly female known as Topaz, who has the power and viciousness to bring down Domino and everyone she cares about. And has good reason to hate her guts.

Marvel.com: What’s the most fun part about writing for a mutant who can manipulate probability?

Gail Simone: It’s fun trying to have those moments happen without feeling like we’re cheating. If a plane lands on the bad guy when he’s about to shoot her, that’s really cheating the audience. We have to do better than that, and I am enjoying that challenge. Aside from that, it’s fun writing her with her best friends, Outlaw and Diamondback, in their little merc trio. I have rarely had so much fun writing three characters together.

Marvel.com: You’ve said that you love exploring what it means to be a mercenary and a mutant in this universe. Can you expound on that a little bit?

Gail Simone: Oh, yeah! Well, it’s no secret that I love writing mercs. I love writing the heroes who aren’t quite fully heroic and the bad guys who aren’t quite fully villainous. I love the idea of these beings, these extraordinary people, doing this grunt work for a paycheck. That is a position I think a lot of people relate to. As for mercs, you know, I think the whole mutant story is one of the richest subgroups in comics; there’s nothing quite like it. Characters from Cypher all the way up to Dark Phoenix—there’s a lot to explore.

Get ready to explore DOMINO #1, by Gail Simone and David Baldeón, on April 11!

Star Wars Spotlight: Obi-Wan & Anakin

Every week, we comb through the digital archives of Marvel Unlimited to showcase a classic story from a galaxy far, far away. So kick back, pour a glass of blue milk, and remember tales of the Light Side, the Dark, and all the scoundrels in between….

Like a sun setting over the horizon, the transition from light to dark is gradual, slow. This process began for Anakin Skywalker when he was a young man, a slave on Tatooine—and would only conclude following his near-death on Mustafar. There were many steps along the way, key points in his life that could have led him to infinite other destinies. And in the five issue limited series, STAR WARS: OBI-WAN & ANAKIN by Charles Soule and Marco Checchetto, readers witnessed a few of those crucial moments in the young Jedi’s life.

After years of war between the Closed and Open factions, the planet Carnelion IV had been rendered nearly uninhabitable. The humanoid groups made their homes up in mountains while more monstrous dwellers prowled through the remains of once beautiful cities.

In response to the unrest, Anakin and his master Obi-Wan Kenobi traveled to the planet before finding themselves confronted with a trio of survivors, Grecker of the Closed, and Mother Pran and Kolara of the Open. After the Jedi mentioned they’d been called there by a distress signal, the enemies quickly agreed to work together, though when the group came under attack, the Open followers knocked Anakin unconscious and kidnapped him, before blowing up the ship that held Obi-Wan and Grecker still inside.

Mother Pran and Kolara took Skywalker back to their home and had him to fix their mech suits so that they could finally gain an upper hand against the Closed. Meanwhile, Kenobi and Grecker traveled through perilous places to finally arrive at the source of the beacon that called the Jedi to the planet in the first place. Soon after, Grecker found himself on the wrong end of a blaster when he tried to feed Kenobi to one of Carnelion IV’s monsters.

Obi-Wan then met the reclusive Sera, a woman whose life’s work was to save the art and technology of the imploding planet. She collected artifacts and connected them to kites, so that younger generations could see what they were missing by living in a world overrun by war. She sent out the distress call hoping that the Jedi would arrive to end the war and pave a way for the youth to thrive in peace.

When the Open and the Closed discovered that Sera was the source of the beacon, all members of each faction raced to kill her. When the soldiers departed, Anakin convinced the remaining young people to free him so that he could save the urban legend they knew as the Scavenger—Sera. And with some assistance from a late-arriving contingent of Republic soldiers and Jedi, Obi-Wan and Anakin succeeded in their mission.

This limited series also contained a series of flashbacks wherein Anakin struggled with whether he wanted to continue training with the Jedi. Chancellor Palpatine, one of the greatest influences in Skywalker’s life, requested the young Jedi’s presence one evening before taking him to the streets of Coruscant, where he manipulated Skywalker into making a supposedly corrupt Senator lose money in a dice game. Palpatine sewed the seeds of dissent in his future protege by presenting the Senate as a system that could not keep its own members in line, let alone the planets it represented.
