The History of Spider-Man: 2006

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe and the web-slinger will swing onto the silver screen once again in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” this May! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story…

Spider-Man began a worldwide search for a cure for his debilitating disease in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #2, and used Dr. Doom’s time machine to visit loved ones from his past in MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #20. In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #526, his old foe Morlun attacked and gouged out one of his eyes. This sent Spidey to the hospital in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #3 where he recovered just enough to kill Morlun and then die himself.

The webslinger’s corpse disappeared in MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #21, and Peter Parker entered a strange dream world in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #527, only to be reborn from a cocoon in Avengers Tower. Tony Stark wanted to know how and why it occurred in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #4, and Spidey demonstrated new powers in MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #22. Later, he asked a tailor to make him a new costume while Stark began designing one himself in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #528.

Spidey met a hero from another dimension and fought Dr. Octopus with him in MARVEL TEAM-UP #14, as well as teamed up with other heroes to fight a new menace called Chronok in MARVEL TEAM-UP #15. The wallcrawler discovered Ronin to be Echo in NEW AVENGERS #13, and joined his teammates to go public as Avengers in NEW AVENGERS #14 and NEW AVENGERS #15. A woman became convinced of Spidey’s “obsession” with her in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #5, and J. Jonah Jameson pitted Mexican wrestlers against his old nemesis in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #6 and FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #7.

When Stark subsequently turned on him, Peter went on national TV once again to say he’d made a big mistake in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #536.

Talking Fantastic Four on Earth’s Mightiest Show

Following today’s huge announcement about this August’s return of the Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort stopped by a brand new episode of Earth’s Mightiest Show to discuss the exciting news!

The series, written by Dan Slott with art by Sara Pichelli, reunites Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch after years of separation. And in the clip above, Tom speaks about the group’s importance throughout the history of Marvel.

“The FF are kind of the cornerstone of the Marvel Universe; everything that we’ve done in publishing goes back to FANTASTIC FOUR #1,” notes Brevoort. “They really are kind of the foundation. And for the couple of years that they haven’t been around—since Secret Wars—absence has made the heart grow fonder. There’s been a real wellspring of interest and support among the fans.”

Excited for their long-awaited return, he teases big things to come for Marvel’s First Family. “Now we’re finally at the point where we’re able to unify the team again, bring the family back together, and put them back at the center of the Marvel Universe where they belong!”

The History of Jane Foster

In last week’s MIGHTY THOR #705, by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman, Jane Foster Thor fought alongside the Odinson for the final time.

The issue proved to be a beautiful send-off to a character that had long proved worthy of wielding Mjolnir’s power. Long before taking up the godly mantle, however, Foster made her first appearance in 1962’s JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #84.

Mighty Thor (2015) #705

One issue prior, in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83, physician Dr. Donald Blake stumbled upon an item that turned him into the mighty Thor. He used the power to fend of an alien invasion before returning home to New York City and his practice, where a nurse named Jane Foster also worked. Don secretly pined for her, but kept his feelings a secret…though he didn’t know that Jane had feelings for him as well.

When the Asgardian known as Thor started showing up in Blake’s stead, however, Foster was swept off her feet. Eventually, Jane and Don made their feelings for each other known and began dating—but Blake still kept his secret identity from her. Then, in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #124, he revealed his alter-ego to Foster in response to her worries about his constant disappearances and secrets.

Summoned back to Asgard by Odin, Blake planned on giving up his godhood in favor of a life on Earth alongside Jane, but they both ran into a few problems. He got caught up in a series of adventures with Hercules while she discovered that her new roommate, Tana Nile, was actually an alien sent to find Thor and request his help.

Finally, in the pages of THOR #136, Jane got to see Asgard for the first time. Having seen the error of his controlling ways, Odin gave Jane godlike powers so that she and Thor could wed. Unfortunately, Foster doubted her Odin-granted gift of flight and showed great fear in the face of a creature called the Unknown. However, before Odin could declare her unfit for godhood, Jane said that she didn’t want anything to do with it. Odin then returned her to Earth…with no memories of the Thor she once loved.

Foster went to medical school and earned her doctorate before finding herself in Thor’s orbit once again during the 1998 THOR series. There, she worked alongside a paramedic named Jake Olsen, who held the God of Thunder mantle at that point in time.

In THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #12, Foster revealed to the Odinson that she had breast cancer. And though he wanted to fight it with his Asgardian powers, she refused. Later, in issue #24, the Odinson asked Jane to represent Midgard at the Congress of Worlds, sending her to new heights on the galactic scale.

Everything changed for Jane Foster after the events of Original Sin, though, when Nick Fury whispered something into the Odinson’s ear that made him unworthy of Mjolnir. Soon after, readers started seeing a female Thor wielding the mighty hammer and eventually learned that Jane Foster had proven herself starting with 2014’s THOR.

After taking up the hammer, Jane Foster became the one and only hero to hold the title, starring in both THOR and then THE MIGHTY THOR. And in a storyline spanning years, Jane met her demise in worthy fashion as she fought, selflessly, to the very end.

The History of the Black Panther: 2005-2006

For more than 50 years, the Black Panther has stood at the forefront on the Marvel Universe. With T’Challa appearing on the big screen again this year in both Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” take a look back at over five decades worth of comic book adventures for the King of Wakanda!

The U.S. government weighed options of involving itself in the Black Panther’s nation of Wakanda in BLACK PANTHER #1, while elsewhere the hero’s old foe Klaw assembled a team of agents for his own invasion. When the National Security Agency decided to make a secret landing in Wakanda in BLACK PANTHER #2, Klaw moved to launch his strikeforce.

With backing by the neighboring nation of Niganda he’d secured in BLACK PANTHER #3, the Master of Sound rained hellfire on Wakanda’s capital in BLACK PANTHER #4. The Radioactive Man, operating on orders from Klaw, attacked the small country’s storehouse of precious vibranium in BLACK PANTHER #5, while the mastermind took T’Challa’s mother hostage.

The Panther rescued Ramonda in BLACK PANTHER #6, and his sister Shuri battled and killed Radioactive Man, while T’Challa in turn faced Klaw and killed him in combat. When the smoke cleared from the action, The Black Panther demanded that U.S. Deathlok troops return to their home base and not remain in Wakanda.

After the strange situation of the reality-bending House of M in BLACK PANTHER #7, the X-Men approached T’Challa in X-MEN #175 about investigating mutant creatures in strife-torn Niganda. The Panther and his mutant allies entered Wakanda’s neighboring nation in BLACK PANTHER #8 and found it nearly crippled with chaos.

The Red Ghost captured the X-Men in Niganda in X-MEN #176, while Storm reunited with T’Challa. Together, the heroes won their battle versus Red Ghost in BLACK PANTHER #9, and Storm quit the X-Men to stay in Wakanda with the Panther.

The Black Panther went on the prowl for a wife in New York in BLACK PANTHER #10, but after Monica Lynne turned him down he approached Luke Cage with a job offer. Then, in BLACK PANTHER #11, the criminal overlord called Han sent the Hand against the Panther and Cage when T’Challa refused to wed the villain’s daughter.

Later, the two heroes flew down to New Orleans in BLACK PANTHER #12 to help in the aftermath of a hurricane, but ran afoul of vampires. With the help of Blade and Brother Voodoo, they staked their claim to victory over the bloodsuckers in BLACK PANTHER #13.

After returning Cage to New York in BLACK PANTHER #14, T’Challa jetted back to Wakanda and proposed marriage to Storm of the X-Men, whom he’d loved for many years. She accepted his proposal in BLACK PANTHER #15 and together the happy couple announced their engagement publicly in BLACK PANTHER #16 and began to issue invitations to the impending nuptials.

Following a bachelor party thrown by Luke Cage and Wolverine in BLACK PANTHER #17, T’Challa and Storm made their vows to each other in BLACK PANTHER #18. Reed Richards approached the Panther in CIVIL WAR #3 to issue a request from the U.S. government for aid in tracking down rogue super heroes, but the king of Wakanda refused, saying his nation must remain neutral.

The newly wed Panther and his bride traveled to Latveria in BLACK PANTHER #19, but declined Doctor Doom’s suggestion that their two countries form an alliance. Afterward, T’Challa and Storm landed on the Moon to confer with the Inhumans in BLACK PANTHER #20, and with Namor the Sub-Mariner in Atlantis in BLACK PANTHER #21.

When he could no longer avoid the repercussions of the struggle between Iron Man and Captain America, Black Panther joined Cap’s underground resistance fighters to storm Stark’s secret prison in CIVIL WAR #6.
