Star Wars Spotlight: Monsters of Arbra

Every week, we comb through the digital archives of Marvel Unlimited to showcase a classic story from a galaxy far, far away. So kick back, pour a tall glass of blue milk, and remember tales of the Light Side, the Dark, and all the scoundrels in between…. The Rebel Alliance faced plenty of challenges in the wake of “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.” Most pressingly, they needed to find another new base of operations and figure out how to recover Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. In 1981’s STAR WARS #55, writer David Michelinie and artist Walt Simonson dealt with the first problem head-on as Leia Organa lead an expedition to a planet called Arbra, which seemed like a perfect spot. As Leia explored, Luke and the Rebel fleet carried on in orbit around the system to minimize the Empire’s ability to find and attack them. The hero, uncomfortable with the plan that required the fleet to leave Leia and her crew if they didn’t hear from them within three days, struggled to keep calm. On Arbra, while the Rebels slept in their encampment, a group of local furry animals called Hoojibs started wreaking havoc on their equipment. But when the creatures attacked C-3PO, the droid sounded an alarm, alerting the group to the threat. In the middle of all that chaos, Leia discovered that the Hoojibs actually consumed energy—then got a much bigger surprise when one of the Hoojibs telepathically introduced himself as Plif! Plif explained that his people fed off of the geothermal energy collected by crystals in their cave. And, in addition to dealing with the Rebel visitors, the Hoojibs also knew of a threat in the form of a space-faring monster called the Slivilith. Plif relayed that the Slivilith attacked their cave in search of warmth, forcing the Hoojibs to run away from their home. Knowing that they needed to stop the Slivilith so they could regain energy to fuel the radios and call the fleet, Leia agreed to help their furry new friends fight the beast. As a few Rebel soldiers fought the monster with primitive weapons, Leia and Chewbacca lured it into the cavern where they distracted the menace before Chewie grabbed the tentacles dangling from it’s body and slammed the Slivilith into a wall of crystals, ending its rampage. Though that threat was neutralized, tensions remained when members of the Rebel party said they could easily take over Arbra to use as their base of operations. The Hoojibs did not agree, so the battle nearly continued—until Leia stepped in to say that taking over this planet would make the Rebels no better than the Empire. As they turned to leave, Plif, moved by Leia’s virtue, said that the Rebellion could stay on Arbra as their guests for as long as they needed. From the Jedi Temple Archives During this story, readers witnessed Lando Calrissian tell Luke that he had decided to take the Millennium Falcon and return to Cloud City because he couldn’t shake the difficult memory of the Empire taking over the place he was responsible for. At the end of the tale, Lando flew the Falcon through the Bespin skies, aware that something drastic had occurred…he landed to find that Cloud City had been completely deserted. The History of the Black Panther: 2003-2004

For more than 50 years, the Black Panther has stood at the forefront on the Marvel Universe. With T’Challa appearing on the big screen again this year in both Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” take a look back at over five decades worth of comic book adventures for the King of Wakanda! Police officer Kasper Cole, the new Black Panther, opposed the 66 Bridges gang in BLACK PANTHER #51, while T’Challa remained missing. Cole found the Wakandan king in a housing project in New York City in BLACK PANTHER #52, but when he learned of an attack on his father in prison rushed off to investigate it in BLACK PANTHER #53. Cole discovered a crooked cop called for the hit on his dad in BLACK PANTHER #54, while another police officer looked into the new Panther’s identity. Cole gained info on the mysterious Kibuka of the 66 Bridges in BLACK PANTHER #55, unaware of a net closing in on him. Finally, together with T’Challa and The White Wolf, Cole took down the corrupt cops in BLACK PANTHER #56 and accepted a promotion in the police department to rank of detective. In BLACK PANTHER #57, T’Challa told of a time when he tried to protect the former king of Dakenia, and also failed to stop the assassination of the man’s successor in BLACK PANTHER #58. Teaming up with The Falcon in BLACK PANTHER #59, Kasper searched for the kidnapped son of a fellow cop. Learning that the case involved the 66 Bridges gang, he attempted the ancient Wakandan Rite of Ascension to gain more power in BLACK PANTHER #60. T’Challa’s longtime foe Erik Killmonger fought Cole for the title in BLACK PANTHER #61, but then awarded him a synthetic version of the heart-shaped herb which bestowed the Panther’s abilities on a worthy person. Now powered, Cole once again leapt onto the trail of the missing boy in BLACK PANTHER #62, only to discover the case completed by a restored T’Challa. Later, impressed with his diligence, the true Panther urged Cole to take on the mantle of the White Tiger. T’Challa looked into the mystery of the red cloud of death bacteria over the Dakotas in AVENGERS #66, but when he and Tony Stark learned of its origin as a bio-weapon, they found themselves locked out of their government lab by The Red Skull posing as Secretary of Defense Dell Rusk. The Panther continued his quest for a cure in AVENGERS #67, but ended up a prisoner of the United States when Rusk sent soldiers to subdue him and Stark. After being freed by Iron Man in AVENGERS #68, T’Challa made his way to Rusk’s office in AVENGERS #69 to overhear the Red Skull’s plot to frame Wakanda for the spreading plague. In AVENGERS #70, the Black Panther fought the Skull one-on-one and won the day, as well as an antidote for the deadly bacteria. With lingering differences from their previous mission, Black Panther and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes witnessed the death of Jack of Hearts in AVENGERS #76, as well as the continued splintering of their teamwork. Later, in IRON MAN #75, T’Challa joined with his comrades to discuss whether or not Tony Stark should resign from the Avengers due to his new position as Secretary of Defense. Stark arrived at Avengers Mansion in IRON MAN #84 to discuss matters with the Panther and others, but instead continued on a secret mission to recover a deactivated android from the building’s basement. When it accidentally activated in IRON MAN #85, T’Challa fought alongside his teammates to block the rampage. At a full meeting of the United Nations, T’Challa placed himself between an unstable Tony Stark and the Latverian ambassador in AVENGERS #500, unaware of the simultaneous destruction of Avengers Mansion. Standing with his fellow heroes, The Black Panther approached the smoldering ruins in AVENGERS #501 to seek answers to troubling questions over the incident. The Kree alien warrior race attacked the gathering in AVENGERS #502, prompting T’Challa to join in the fight. Hawkeye nobly sacrificed himself to save his teammates, and after the Kree retreated, the Panther heard Doctor Strange and Captain America deduce the culprit behind the heinous act in AVENGERS #503.

The History of Spider-Man: 2005

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe and the web-slinger will swing onto the silver screen once again in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” this May! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story… Spider-Man decided to give a blood transfusion to Gwen Stacy’s daughter Sarah in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #514, and when Sarah’s brother Gabriel showed up not long after as the Green Goblin, the young woman stopped him from killing the hero. Later, Spidey protected a boy named Paul from Wolverine in MARVEL TEAM-UP #1, then discovered his mutant powers in MARVEL TEAM-UP #2. The Kingpin showed up at the infamous super hero poker game in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #21, and the wallcrawler witnessed the death of his old foe Mindworm in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #22. In NEW AVENGERS #1, Spidey joined forces with Captain America and other heroes upon news of a massive super villain breakout at the Raft prison. After battling the villains in NEW AVENGERS #2, Cap formed a new team of Avengers that included Spider-Man as a member in NEW AVENGERS #3. Charlie, an old classmate of Peter Parker’s, asked him for help with a dangerous experiment in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #515, but it blew up in his face and covered him in a vibranium skin in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #516. When Spidey arrived to tussle with Charlie in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #517, the man believed Peter turned him in and headed to Aunt May’s for revenge. The webslinger managed to freeze Charlie in his new skin in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #518, but at the cost of losing May’s house to a fire. An evil incarnation of Tony Stark tried to sap mutant Paul’s powers for himself in MARVEL TEAM-UP #5, but Spidey and X-23 swung in to save the boy. Peter flew off to France in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #23 when he heard of Sarah Stacy’s attempted suicide in Paris. Once there, he rescued her from drug dealers in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #24, and tried not to give into the girl’s growing romantic feelings for him. Mary Jane followed Peter to France in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #25, just in time to witness brother Gabriel’s worsening unstable condition, and Spider-Man’s battle with him in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #26. Spidey traveled to the Savage Land with the Avengers in NEW AVENGERS #4 to confront Sauron, but ended up captured by the Mutates there in NEW AVENGERS #5. The team also uncovered a conspiracy within S.H.I.E.L.D. in NEW AVENGERS #6, and welcomed Wolverine into their ranks. Tony Stark invited Peter, MJ, and May to live in Avengers Tower in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #519 just as Hydra returned to cause trouble again. After the Avengers battled Hydra agents in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #520, the webslinger realized their scheme and prepared for another attack. Later, he unknowingly saved Hydra’s leader in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #521 and infiltrated the group’s base in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #522 to discover their plan to poison the water supply. The Avengers arrived in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #523 to help Spidey, and the wallcrawler jumped on a Hydra missile sent to deliver a bio agent into the water. He managed to divert it, but when it exploded, our hero needed saving by Iron Man in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #524. Medical tests after the event showed disturbing anomalies in Spidey’s blood. Moon Knight joined forces with Spider-Man to clash with the Ringmaster in MARVEL TEAM-UP #7, and Peter held of anxiety and fatigue over his costumed career with advice from Aunt May in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #27. The Avengers fought the Wrecker as the Sentry grew more unstable in NEW AVENGERS #7, but when they decided to proceed with an intervention on him in NEW AVENGERS #8, he disappeared, prompting a big battle with the Void in NEW AVENGERS #9 and the Sentry regaining his sanity in NEW AVENGERS #10. Spidey, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Captain America, and Wolverine fought Ringmaster again in MARVEL TEAM-UP #10, then allowed Dr. Strange to transport them all to Japan to clash with a giant Titannus in MARVEL TEAM-UP #11. Titannus tried to evoke sympathy in the heroes in MARVEL TEAM-UP #12, but wound up blowing his own head off in MARVEL TEAM-UP #13. Evil Tony Stark showed up afterward to cast further gloom on the day. Captain America brought in the mystery man known as Ronin in NEW AVENGERS #11 to infiltrate a meeting of the Hand, Hydra, and the Silver Samurai. In NEW AVENGERS #12, Spidey and his teammates directly engaged the Hand. Following a fight with new criminal Tracer in FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #1, a Dr. Castillo informed Spidey of his impending death after she ran a blood test, and to make matters worse, Morlun returned to spy on Mary Jane in MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #19. Later, Morlun appeared to the wallcrawler to taunt him with riddles as our hero grew ever weaker from his strange sickness…

The Punisher vs. the Good Guys

This May, Frank Castle becomes an antihero again. Literally. Fresh off his noble outing as a freedom fighter in Chernaya, Castle makes his way back to the States to find that his War Machine armor is being tracked—and that Nick Fury is holding the leash. In “Target: Punisher,” Frank needs to stay one step ahead of Fury if he wants to keep a handle on his heavy artillery. And for what the Punisher’s got planned…he’s gonna need it. Written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Guiu Vilanova, PUNISHER #225 sees the heroes of the Marvel Universe team up to take on Frank Castle. “Expect it to get ugly,” says Rosenberg. “Since we first announced Frank was taking the War Machine armor people have been asking us when we’d see him go up against some heavy hitters in the Marvel Universe. The answer is right now. Frank going over to Chernaya, decimating an army, and killing a world leader was just his warm up. Now he’s bringing the war to New York City and the list of people who don’t want that to happen is long. Frank Castle has leveled up and he’s going to be fighting in a whole new weight class.” -
