It’s been more than two decades since we last witnessed SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK unleash their mercenary methods. Released in April 1995, issue #35 saw the end of the Symkarian soldier’s run with her band of outlaws.
But this November, writer Christa Faust joins artist Paulo Siqueira to reignite the tale with SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK #36!
Silver gets a Film Noir makeover in this Marvel Legacy one-shot—the issue, entitled “Silver and Bold,” places the merc in the deadly wake of Norman Osborn’s recent rise to power in the Symkarian government. How will Silver and the infamous Wild Pack retaliate?
We caught up with Christa to get the latest scoop.
Marvel.com: What can you tell us about the plot of issue #36?
Christa Faust: Only that it’s pulpy and action-packed—and that Silver faces off against an all-female terrorist organization that will take her back to her roots.
Marvel.com: Several years ago in an AMAZING SPIDER-MAN storyline, Silver appeared to die—but now she’s back. How has Silver been dealing with that psychologically?
Christa Faust: There isn’t a lot of downtime for overt reminiscence and reflection in a one-shot…but I wanted to show the profound and lasting effects of everything she’s been through in more subtle ways—through her demeanor and attitude. Film Noir and the books that inspired the genre are filled with tarnished knights and bruised angels, so those are my favorite kinds of stories to tell. A character who has no demons is no fun to write.
Marvel.com: What does the SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK legacy mean to you?
Christa Faust: It’s a tremendous honor for me to have a chance to play in this legendary universe—and I’m all about strong female characters. Any chance to bring women out of secondary roles and into the spotlight is a win for me.
Marvel.com: How has Silver Sable changed since the ‘90s? And how does she continue to change today?
Christa Faust: I don’t want to give too much away, but I also know that readers get bored with characters who never change or grow. I want to use everything she’s been through to give her depth and grit—to hone her strengths while still allowing her to be vulnerable and human.
It’s always a fine line to walk between modernizing an existing property and honoring the backstory, but I’ve been having a blast with it so far. I’m also especially excited to connect with female readers who are looking for a tough and complex character they can relate to. I would love to have a chance to dig in a little deeper with her in future projects.
Marvel.com: When you infuse the Film Noir detective tone into Silver, it seems like you’re nodding to the roots of the entire super hero genre—the predecessor of which was crime pulp fiction.
Christa Faust: Absolutely! I’m mixing up a high-octane combo of classic two-fisted 20th century pulp with wisecracking ‘80s action flicks as an homage to her decade of origin. For sure—vintage pulp sensibility is part of the package when you hire a writer like me.
Look out for SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK #36, by Christa Faust with art by Paulo Siqueira, this November!
