Publisher says its latest toys-to-life game sold over half a million copies during launch period in 2012, compared to 294,000 for Disney Infinity.
Activision Publishing announced today that Skylanders Giants sold more than 500,000 combined Starter Packs and Portal Owner Packs in the United States and Europe during its first two weeks on sale in October 2012.
The announcement comes on the same day that Disney Interactive revealed that Disney Infinity sold 294,000 Starter Packs in the United States alone during its own two-week launch period last month.
Disney did not reveal a combined sales figure for the U.S. and Europe, but said the company is “very pleased” with the game’s global sales performance.
According to Activision, Skylanders Giants is the best-selling console and handheld game year-to-date in terms of overall dollars spent on the game, as well as its toys and accessories. The game remains the “biggest kids’ video game launch in the U.S. and Europe,” Activision said.
Activision also said that Skylanders figures are “expected” to have outsold the “top action-figure properties” in the U.S. and Europe for the first eight months of 2013. These competing action-figures were not named.
In all, the Skylanders franchise has generated more than $1.5 billion in worldwide retail sales.
The next entry in the series is Skylanders: Swap Force, which will be released this fall on current- and next-generation consoles, as well as PC and handhelds.
